Possible Impaction
I bought here from a friend of mine with a setup and she seemed fine for about 2 months then i took her off crickets for as they were escaping and started her on mealworms and waxworms she seemed ok on these for about a month then all of a sudden stopped eating or pooing, and also shedding ALOT seems like she is always shedding but her tail still looks fat. i did some online research and read it could be the worms but it could also be the sand she was on so i took her off that also and she is now house on special reptile carpet but she hasnt eaten any more worms since. i have bought some more crickets and put them in with her yesterday and she hasnt eaten them yet but i just hand fed her some apple sauce with olive oil in hopefully this will work. I tried soaking her in shallow warm water but she seemed stressed and climbed out. the 2 ends of the tank are 29.1°C and 16.7°C at the moment (night) but it does heat up a little buring the day Any more Advice? Thanks in advance I am taking her to the vet midweek. |

It’s the sand, especially if you had something lame like calci-sand in there. That stuff kills. The mealworms wont normally cause impaction unless your tank temps are too cold. On that note... 29 is a bit cold (way too cold for daytime temps). It needs to reach 33 on the hot side during the day. And the tank shouldn’t drop below 21. Try getting a higher watt bulb, adding an extra lamp with a blue/red bulb for night time, or getting a bigger UnderTankHeater. Leopard geckos can’t digest their food in the temps you have going on, or any temps below 31 (hot side). So that’s something you absolutely have to improve on. The thermometer is also something to be looked at. The best thermometer out there is the digital variety with a probe. The probe measures ground heat, which is where the leo hangs out. The second best is a temp gun. The analogue and fish tank sticker thermometers can be quite a bit off and do absolutely nothing for terrestrial geckos as they only measure air temperatures. Once you bump the temps and give the gecko a 10 minute warmsoak, twice a day, the poop should come out and the appetite will definitely improve. The vet will likely do an enema, but that wont stop the problem from happening again or help the leo eat if the tank is too cold. Warmsoaks are easier than you’re putting on. Get a sandwich container that you don’t love with a lid. Poke a few holes in the lid for breathing, put in a small amount of luke warm water (no higher than the leo’s ankles) or a damp, warm paper towel (if it’s a small leo or you’re afraid of drowning), and leave the leo in there for the fore-mentioned time frame. It acts like a sauna. You can also, optionally, put three (only three) drops of canola oil on the lip of the leo to lick up to lubricate the system. |

The thermometer i am using is a digital one with 2 probes for each end of the tank so i will improve my temps today, all i have in my tank for heat is a under the carpet heater that is fixed inside the tank, this is how i bought this from my friend, but i will go to my local pet shop today and get a small heat lamp and place it on the hot side. i have plenty of small containers so ill try putting the lid on with holes, i didnt want to before as i was afraid of suffocation if the holes were too small, Instead of canola oil can i use olive oil and how often can i do this? once a day? Thanks again. |
