Sticky Situation-The Dangers of Housng in Garages

Recently (this morning in fact), I was placed in a situation I do not want to find myself in again. I am posting this not to stop people from keeping leos in garages if that is the only option available, but to notify them of the precautions they must take.

This morning I went downstairs to check on my male and female geckos I keep in the garage. They are kept in large Exo Terra breeding cages. I have tape running alongside on end on the bottom, connected to the thermostat. In the males cage is the temperature probe, which goes in through a little flap through the top. Anyway, I look into his cage and he was no where to be found. Sure enough, the top flap is slightly more open than how it was last night. Quickly, after making sure he was not under the door, I asked my father to close it. As I was walking back to start looking for him, I noticed one of the glue traps we have set up for mice was moving. As I took a closer look, to my horror, there he was, curled up in it, frantically thrashing, trying to get out. I notified my father and we very carefully got him off the trap. Though he had no physical damage, he was clearly very stressed, in shock, tired, and still had a lot of glue on the bottom of his belly, his tail, his feet, and his lower jaw. We took him inside and gave him a warm bath, to no avail. We then attempted to wipe it off with a warm towel. Again, no success. After checking online, we were finally able to get the glue off with vegetable oil. We placed him back in his cage, made sure the top was completley secure, and then watched as he slowly made his way into his warm hide, exhausted. The glue on him seemed less sticky than usual, so he had been stuck in the trap for some time. If I had not gone and checked on him then, he very easily could have died.

Again, if housing your herp in the garage is your only option, do not be discouraged to do so. However, do make sure that the top is 100% secure, there are no other openings, and if you do have any traps of any kind, create a barrier to where it would be difficult for a leopard gecko to reach, but a mouse could still access through climbing, As of now he is fine-a little scared and very tired, but fine.

Oh man, sorry you had to deal with that. I don’t think I’d ever have glue traps laid with reptiles around, period. If I absolutely had to, I’d probably use live traps.

 That happened to me!!!

Ok so like 10 min ago I was just cleaning out my leopard gecko cage and finished when I look in the plastic container that I put my 2 geckos in earlier and ,to my surprise the lid is off and they are gone!!!
Ok so I kind of panicked and looked around and find my calmer female, Lilly under a fan. I am suddenly relived and wonder how they pushed off the lid, when it hits me, my big clumsy male, Striker, is still out there. I look around and find him in a glue trap. I somehow know to run him in hot water and MINERAL OIL. Which made him slip off. I was so happy!

Another great way to remove reptiles from glue traps is Pam cooking spray. I’ve had to take snakes out of glue traps before I up and pitched the traps (Switched to rat poison, which has so far worked well for me without taking out the garter snake population).

Good to know your leo is okay, Ryry.
