Would newspaper be an alright substrate? I’m going to provide a lot of climbing branches and such.

do not use newspaper!!!
there are other things to make clean up is fast and simple, here’s the best two choices.

Reptile Carpet: you just have to take the carpet out and clean it.
River Rocks: you just have to take out the rocks that have stuff on them.

paper towel is awesome and it holds a bit of moisture to keep the humidity up. I used to use bark but I was scared my tokay would eat some of it so I replaced it with papertowel.

I’ve been using sand mixed with calcium stuff. My tokay seems to like it. It holds moisture well to keep the humidity up, it’s easy to clean (I’ve got a little sand sifter thing for that), and easy to make look nice.

All,
I have not found newsprint to be acceptable simply because it doesn’t hold moisture well. Paper towels are only just a little bit better. A much more natural and preferable substrate would be bark, mulch, or bed-a-beast (which is ground coconut fiber). These will hold humidity quite well. My personal favorite bedding is coconut fiber mixed with a small amount of sand and orchid bark. It looks very natural and holds humidity very well. The thing I find that is most often incorrect in the husbandry of these animals is their need for humidity. Most pet stores just don’t realize they need a high humidity, just imagine the hottest, wettest looking war movie you’ve seen that took place in a jungle. That’s what should be strived for. These are very hardy animals, and are quite forgiving of husbandry errors, (though their bite might tell another story), thus many pet stores incorrectly inform people of their needs, and so most people who are beginning herpers are misinformed, (through no fault of their own I must say). I hope this helped anyone who had questions.

Evan
