 Dark colors..

My tokay seems to be dark, or even black alot of the time now, but usually only when she’s hiding under the plants in the shadows. Is this normal? She always turns back to normal colors when I pick her up, or when she’s active. The temperature in the tank is pretty warm, so I’m not worried about her being too cold. However, the humidty is very low (20-50%), though I’m still working on that.

Leo,
It could be a number of reasons. Perhaps the temp isn’t actually as high as it needs to be, (it should be at least 80F, even 85F if you can swing it), there could be too few plants for her to hide behind thus she’s always stressed because she has nowhere to hide, it could be that she does indeed have parasites, or it could even be that if you leave crickets in her cage they stress her by chirping or biting her. There are other possibilities I would imagine, but these seem the most likely to me. The humidity shouldn’t be what’s causing this, it might be too low, but I don’t see that being the culprit. I would say, if for no other reason than as a precaution, have a fecal exam done. It is cheap, and may tell you what’s wrong and what you might be up against. If this turns out to be the problem, parasites are very easy to fix. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Regards, Evan

Dont forget that it changes colours to blend in too. So for it to be dark when its hiding behind plants or against something dark is natural.

She usually only changes colors when she’s hiding in one of her three hiding places. I do leave crickets in there occasionally, but I usually only put a few in before she wakes up (unless I get sick of trying to catch them..) I’m considering getting a fecal test done as soon as I can. It doesn’t seem to be really affecting her at all, and like I said, she goes right back to normal when I’m holding her.
