 Tokay Curiousity!

I am pretty sure I am dropping the idea of getting a huge lizard (monitor and iguana). Instead, I am thinking about keeping more than one smaller lizard. Tokays immediately cought my eye. I would like to keep a 1.1 pair or, if possible, 1.2 trio, all in the same cage. Is this possible? I know males should never be housed together but I know most females can tolerate each other. What size should I get for a pair/trio?

Also, any other help would greatly be appreciated. I have read about them and their "so-called" temperament problems. Are they that bad or are they exaggerated? How bad is a bite from a tokay?

Thanks,
ZG

Tokay’s are nice but mean as hell both male and female will tear you up if you try to hold them you will have to work with them before you can hold them with out biting.Tokay’s or the meanest of all geckos.Yes male should never be kept together 2-3 female for one male if one Tokay them 20 gal tall will work 2 or more try and get a 50 gal. or 18,18,18 or 18,24,18 EXO. And a lot of hiding spots for them they love to hide here are a few pics of my guy hope it helps.

Can you handle him? What is he feeding on? Does he snap and bite at you? Also, did you say I could keep 1 - 2 females and a male together? If so, I would probably get a 2 x 2 x 2 or 2 x 2 x 3 cage.

Thanks,
ZG

You have to give Tokays some credit. They are very consistent in that every last one of them will nail you if you freak them out. :) Check this guy out. Hatched out last year and he was about 8 hours old in this pic.

He aint smilin’ for the camera.

What do they eat? How many a day? Do they need any supplements? What should the humidity be? Can they be tamed down not to bite? Does a babies bite hurt?

Thanks,
ZG

they eat chix, meal worms, pinkies, some wax worms.Cal supplements but if feed the right bugs no supplements needed thats very hard to do.give them 4-6 chix every other day waxworm as a treat 1-2times a month pinkies once a month for the fat. There are care sheets on here for more help.Yes just like all animals the more you work with them the better they feel about and towards you.Just remember not to over handle them at frist dew to the stress break them in slow a few min. a day.Humidity should be 75-90% temp 80-90 in day and 75-85 at night.Yes bite hurts no ware near the big guys but still hurts.

by Chix I hope you mean crickets. My guy eats about 30 crickets a week

Chewy is in a 18X18X24 and personally once they are adults I wouldn’t even keep 2 in his tank. I think they need a lot of room. He’s 13 1/2" big big boy.

Wow, he is awesome. I was thinking about getting one of those Exo-Terra cages that is like 3 x 1.5 x 2. Would that be enough? How many crickets should I feed a baby a day? By the way camo, does he bite? If so, does it hurt much?

Thanks,
ZG

Feed the baby ones pretty much as much as they’ll eat whenever they want and very important to spray them down often. They get dehydrated pretty fast.
