I am a new owner of three gorgeous girls that i ordered online. I received them Yesterday and I was so excited...until I saw them. 2 of them are so emaciated that the vet today said they are on their deathbed. I got them dewormed b/c they had pinworms. And prety much im just praying that theyll pull through this... but ive rescued abused or neglected reptiles and I of all people know that it is really hard to bring an animal back after its gone so far. These two are so bad that I am amazed and this goes to show how incredibly strong animals thes guys are that they are even still alive. The third is blind in one eye or possibly blind, but it doesnt seem to bother her Any helpful ideas would be welcomed right now because Im terrified Im going to lose one or two of my new girls. Im just so sad that I am the one to watch them decline to the end and I feel so hopeless right now. But Im trying to stay positive if not for myself but for them too. Oh yea btw i also bought flukers emergecy aid for malnurished and dehydated reptile today at the advice of my vet and i gave it to the 1 really really really bad one.any advice would be great guys thanx...:( |

my golden gecko was that thin and full of parasites when I received him years ago. Outside of deworming and syring feeding, I highly recommend you invest in superworms. They’re by far the easiest thing to forcefeed to a lizard and just as easy to find again if they spit it out. I’m bringing this up because I found just syringfeeding sometimes doesn’t make the cut in terms of nutrition. The easiest way to forcefeed a superworm to a gecko is to hold the gecko and gently push at the sides of the mouth until it opens up threateningly to bite you. You then slip the worm in, tug a little, and release the gecko back into the tank. If the worm is deep enough in the mouth and if you leave the gecko alone or step away from the tank, she should just chew and swallow it. But sometimes the gecko will spit it out and you have to repeat the measure. You should only try this method for 10 minutes at a time, as the gecko will be stressed from the experience. Supers are great because they have more nutrition than most other feeders on the market, are a little fattening over time, and you only have to feed one at a time to satisfy the lizard. I recommend if you forcefeed that you put it in tail first, as you don’t want the worm biting the lizard’s mouth. You can also, in the future provided the geckos pull through, cup-train the geckos to eat the supers. Get a plastic see-through cup or an empty superworm cup and put one super in there at a time. The movement should interest the geckos. If you got three and only two are bad, keep the good one separate from the other two. And complain to the website. |

Here are a few ideas that I did with my geckos.. Get some clear power aid drinks, put some in a very shallow dish or saucer and sit the gecko in it.. warm it up a bit.. have it sit in there for like 10minutes or so.. make sure its shallow so she cannot drown in it!! Do that at least 2 times a day for a week or more so.. that’ll rehydrate them. make a gecko smoothie!! this might be a bit gross but do what you gotta do.. get a few crickets or mealies and definitely some wax worms (for fat and carbs) put them in a blender along with some calcium and some water to help water it down.. once you got the smoothie you can either put it in a bowl and hope they eat from it if not you can always use a syringe and force feed them or hope they open their mouth and squirt it in there.. Good luck! |

I find feeding live prey to lizards is far easier than forcing a syringe on them. If the bug still moves, the lizard has more oomph to bite down on it and swallow. |

Its not a myth.. I have been caring for geckos and many other reps for the last 2 and a half decades.. Its happens so better be safe than sorry.. Them superwarms are strong and powerful, they can chew though a gecko if the gecko does not kill it and also they can be very dehydrated, so how much acid would a dehydrated sick gecko have to be able to kill a health superwarm?? |
