 Coloration

Not a lot of activity here but curious

eventually (probably december or january) i am getting a tokay gecko
I saw one at the pet store today that made me think.

He looked almost full grown healthy weight and bright eyed. Beautiful guy (girl?)

But his coloration threw me off

Usually blue/grey with orange/red spots

this guy was BLACK with RED spots

Sick? I dont think so

I know a lot of herps get darker when they are stressed...
the pet store didnt look like they were caring for him properly... nothing to climb on and he was in the corner on the ground wide awake not moving at all (i know they are nocturnal) but he looked stressed

Now my question is do they get black when stressed? Or is it actually his coloration? He was only 25 dollars and i want him bad but dont have the space for him right now...

let me know...

the black and very very (like fire engine) red color threw me off

he’s most likely really stressed, i haven’t seen a black morph yet, i dont think, and i doubt it’d be at that shop

if you’re cool with ordering online i’d suggest here, i dont know how their ordering works since i haven’t (and wont be anytime soon, it’s pretty much driving distance) but try to get a baby or juvenile

actually on that same site i just noticed there is a black one(melanistic), no red spots though, and that being the main difference. so yeah i’d say it’s just really stressed or cold. hard to say, maybe cold cause when i’ve seen mine real stressed once it was all blackish. the orange and red was dark too.

anyway, a black morph would run you 700 dollars apparently lmao, so yeah, thats probably not a morph
mine was super light blue when i first saw it at the pet shop, and i havent seen it that color since(was in a bright cage with nowhere to hide). so i wouldn’t get your heart too set on a color. just a color tendencies, if you know what i mean. if you see a real light one, you’ll know it’ll generally be a light colored one, when stressed it wont get as dark as others but you cant get a specific color to stay.

My guy is usually this color

when he is cold and trying to get warm he turns dark like this to attract the heat to him under the lamp

he could be stressed and/or not warm enough

I didnt see a hygrometer in the tank
the temperature (analog p.o.s) said 82F
The pet store had NO experience with reptiles (didnt even know tokays are nocturnal!!!)
So I wouldnt doubt that its "special" and they just dont know it lol

I would never buy a live animal online or anywhere that needs to be shipped. No matter how experienced the shipper is... anything can go wrong.

I would love to get him in hopes that I could help him so he doesnt die :( rescue mission lol

I think he is a wild baby, being so stressed and the fact that he is so large in a pet store... its rare to see adults in pet stores unless they are unwanted pets or wild.

I know most reptiles in pet stores are wild anyway but I feel so bad for him, much more stressful on a wild adult then a baby.

I wish I could take him back to the wild lol the best i can do is give him the best dang home I can.

I will let you guys no if I get him. (I am going to have to buy an entire setup though, I dont have anything extra right now)

Thanksss

obviously it’s up to you but i feel the complete opposite.
i wouldn’t buy pets there because i dont want to support them if they dont care for pets properly. buying pets just means they’ll have room to bring more in to sell.

as far as shipping goes, if its a good company nothing should go wrong, its just stressful for them so be aware of that when they get home. you’re paying $30+ for shipping for a reason. just get tracking info so on the extremely rare occasion that the package gets lost or something, then you can call and harass the **** out of the shipping company

i would rather save an animal from death rather then say "yep, he is gonna die" and get a different one.

That and shipping isn’t my only problem with buying online but I have had bad experiences with company’s having credit card info
