 Bad momma

wow...i have had a tokay for 2 years...and i did my research before i got her. she was a rescuee...and i just learned a bunch from reading these forums...i am mostly on the iggy fourm...but i have learned more on here that i have online over these past 2 years.

ok please yell and scream at me for being a bad momma (even though all the info i got was wrong)...i just learned today that tokay’s arent supposed to be dark in color like mine is...gonna fix the stress problem...didnt know they did better with vertical cages...all the info i got said to put them in horizontal cages...shes got a 20 gallon long at the moment. i have never really seen her climb on the sides of the cage...but ive decided today i am going out to get branches for her cage...i am hoping that will help. she is fed every week- 2 dozen large crickets...the lighting is fine, and the temps are fine. the only thing i can think of is to add more things to climb on...how can i reduce her stress level?

this is my tokay, and she has always been this color:

i know when i first got her, the kid i "saved" her from had her living in a small cardboard box on hamster bedding. shes not very agressive...never been bit or attempted to be bit by her...she squirms a lot when i pick her up, but not really agressive. i am hoping the branches will help. any other tips? please help.

Do you have correct humidity levels?

A dozen crix a week? That doesnt seem like too many... what is the feeding schedule like how many a day... and are you feeding her everyday?

Work on lots of climbing space

you say "correct temperatures"

What do the thermometers read at?

oh no, its 2 dozen a week. i went out and cut some limbs tonight, need to wash and bake them. the hot side is 86 and the cool side is 74. i know here recently its been hard to keep the humitity up because i started a new job, plus im still full time in high school and school started last month. so i am not home in the evenings or much through out the day. but every chance i get, i dowse the tank really well. do you think i need to get a fogger for the water? ive heard those things make the water extremly hot. its a mix of hot and dry in my room. i have 2 birds and they make the air dry, then the heat lamps of 2 geckos and an iggy. we arent running the air or the heat right now, just leaving the windows open.

i just always thought that the lighter colored tokays were a different sub-species or mutation. now i am worried and i feel horrible. i wish i had found this site back when i got her. theres not much info on tokays online, at least when i looked. any other tips?

Just spray her cage down right before it gets dark and she comes out and don’t worry about it. Or if you are really worried about it you could just stick a couple ice cubes on top of the cage and just let them slowly melt and drip down into your enclosure. My two tooks love it. I guess you wouldn’t have to worry about it so much since you have a female, but low humidity for a while usually turns the males off and shuts them up at night.

haha thanks. i still havent added the new additions to her cage yet. i got a bunch of freshly cut branches on thursday, and got home to late (out getting new additions for the iggy cage) to take care of them. and i have worked 8 hours friday, saturday, and then 9 hours tonight...im dead. but i have them cooking in the over now.

a little tip you guys may want to keep in mind. i have birds with natural wood perches, and tokay has her one stick (bout to change) and wood hut, and its a paid to clean. i have found that if i rinse the wood pieces and then stick them in the over at 250 degrees for about 30 mins, it cleans and sterlizes them nicely. i just let them cool for about 20 mins, and were good to go. lol. saves having to mess with bleach. ive never trusted bleach around my animals. oh and to remove build-up on the glass walls, use some vinegar, scrub the crap outta it, then rinse it really well with DISTILLED water, then normal water...really does the trick. cheaper and easier then using those chemical sprays. ive done it for 2 years and it doesnt harm either of my geckos. the distilled water kills the vinegar and the smell. you just gotta deal with the vinegar smell for about 20 mins while your scrubbing. haha.

lots of fake plants and stuff to hide behind but if she’s used to being out in the open then she might not want to hide (my guy rarely does unless he’s sleeping) Your tokay looks really healthy to me from that photo. I also know that females are usually darker than males so she might not be a stressed as you think. I would just work on getting a bigger enclosure for her.

yea, i am looking at a glass terrium(spelling?) for her. the paycheck is coming soon. i think i may know whats been troubling her though. i have just recently (as of last night) discovered a small mite problem. i tell you...this gecko is friends with all her bugs...she had crickets breeding in her cage at one time...ugh...nasty little things. but i brought home an iggy about 2 months ago and she was clean. i just finished the iggy cage early this month, and i am guessing the mites came in with the new bedding. so today, tokay got a "hands on" bath. not fun i tell ya. she got bathed in an iodine and water mix, and then i rubbed her down with a cotton ball and the mix. she actually opened her mouth to treaten me. but her and my lepoard are currently sitting in plastic totes on heating pads in momma’s room. everyone got bathed, and may go back into their cages in my room tomorrow. i have to clean the cages. and my iggys cage is 6ft tall, 5ft long, and 2 ft wide...so thats gonna be a task.

but i will scrub everything with a bleach and water mix tomorrow, and let everything dry outside for a few hours. wish me luck.

ok well i am offically beat...been mite cleaning 2 20 gallon long tank, and my iggys cage which is 6ft tall, 5 ft long, and 2 ft wide...i have the lepoard’s tank sitting in the bath tub with bleach and water. already did the tokay’s...its out in the sun drying...and the iggys cage is wraped up air tight with pest strips in it. its been going for about 3 hrs now...another 2 to go. i also have some provent-a-mite on the way...ordered it this morning.

been woring since 10am..its now a little after 4...and i am about 3/4 the way done. still gotta finish up with lepoard’s tank...and then rest for an hour...then unwrap the iggys cage and let that air out a bit.

the geckos should be in their cages by tonight...the iggy should be in by tomorrow.

ugh...what a process
