 Just brought home my first mr tokay

And here is the story:


We have a small pet store in our small town and they have ALL kinds of animals, really cool but they have no idea how to care for reptiles (shocking huh?) lol

There was a BABY leopard gecko with recent tail loss housed on sand, no thermomter no water, no calcium.

There was a Green tree frog with no therm. no hygrometer housed on fishtank pebbles with water at the bottom nothing else in the tank.

Bearded dragon with no hides, logs, basking, anything. Just sand and thermometer

A tokay gecko with one log housed on bark substrate no thermometer no hygrometer (VERY dry, no water at all)

Well I felt bad for all of them but I got the Tokay!!!

He is a fiesty lil guy like all tokays

He was SOOOOO black and is grey now but still VERY stressed.

We got him set up on some coconut fiber, thermometer, hygrometer (both reading accurate) tons of plants, live and fake, vines, hides, etc.

He hasnt ventured around much we just got him home a half hour ago.

No name yet.... my sister says "TACO" or "KENO" lol
Im thinking RAUL!! lmao

He just looked the most stressed and needed the most help and I have been thinking bout getting a tokay for a while now.

He is very well fed, clear eyes and healthy besides the stress.

we fed him he hasnt touched it yet (not worried)

Im just so happy

He tried biting me through the glass when i tried to take a picture so i will give him some time lol

FULL GROWN ADULT MALE! He has already shown off his bark! hee hee

im just happy lol

He’s not lookin bad, he doesn’t look too skinny or anything. also congrats on your new pet!

ok i didnt have any time to reply last time lol

He does need some weight but he isnt bad.

I got some background on the tank especially now that he would be able to see the rest of the critters. Dont want to stress everybody out lol! Tokay Gecko meet Leopard Gecko. Water Dragon meet Tokay Gecko

lol no thanks.... too much stress ha ha

hes looking pretty good. congrats on the new baby...i know how you feel about the living condiontions...this guy was living in heaven compared to what my tokay was living in when i brought her home...she was in a cardboard box...about 1ftx1ft if that...on HAMSTER bedding...no heat...no light...no hiding places...a HUGE bowl of filthy water (im surprised she didnt drown in it) and the kid who had here didnt want to spend his money on her food...he would rather have spent it on ilegal stuff...im not sure...but i think he may have done some major damage to her feet. shes been vet checked, and was all cleared cept for being stressed and under weight. last check came out good, the doc said her feet were fine... but she doesnt like to climb. i have never seen her climb the glass cage in the 2 years ive had her. her feet are somewhat sticky...but not all that much. i am completely redoing her cage on tuesday...and see if i can get her to start climbing.

have fun and see to it that you keep your layers of skin and pints of blood! lol

thats too bad, yeah my guy is in pretty good shape for being a "rescue" I only consider him a rescue because... well he was mistreated and I had NO intentions to go in and get a tokay gecko.... I just felt so bad for him and I had to do something. Heck if i could have, I would have taken all the animals in there. GRR i hate pet stores

yea i used to love petsmart and petco...i have always hated uncle bills because they sell puppy mill dogs...their cages are FILTHY...theres dead animals in most of their reptile/hamster cages...kittens all have eye infections...and the birds are thrown together in a cage to small for even one of them...at petsmart, i keep having one of the "reptile" ladies try and feed my iggy crickets...BIG NO NO...petco told me how to house my lepoard a few years ago...and it almost killed her...there are no workers there that know how to take care of their animals...it makes me sick...

to get your tokay to climb, get some real thick branches, they like real sturdy type stuff, if i manage to get a pic of mine (my camera phone is gone) i’ll show you but i’m sure you’ll be able to find something.

puppy mills are bad... my cousin accidentally bought a puppy mill dog, they didn’t really notice or think anything of it but when they went into the house of the guy selling the dog, there was a syringe on the table (for heroin). i doubt heroin addicts take good care of dogs, the dog they got has been extremely afraid of all human males he meets.

i know how you feel yex, you wanna save all the animals there, but the more you save, the more get hurt. the pet store will continue buying from poachers or just bad care takers, and they will continue providing bad care while trying to make money. one gecko isn’t going to make a difference but i generally boycott places like that. i will buy food and supplies though, on the idea that they will see all their income is coming from supplies and possibly give up on animals... >.> i hope

well im going to put my resume in to the pet store i got him from so hopefully I can help. I have tons of experience with reptiles and if they let me help I would be happy to.

Maybe then I can make a difference.

I just cant stand by and watch an animal die when I can do something about it.

hey, just real quick with you working there...the petkills are like my walmart...there is strict company policies you have to go by...no matter what...and i sadly doubt they will let you help the reptiles...like someone said on here...they told the reptile guy they habitats sucked...and he said he knew...but if he knew...what wasnt he changing it? the petstores need to make their cages look apealing...the animals health doesnt matter...they just want their money...ive talked to some of the reptile guys (and girl) from my petsmart while they were off duty...and they are pretty knowledgable...but they cant do anything about it...best of luck though!

Yeah its a locally owned small town pet store... and they do seem to care about the reptiles i told them once that the bearded dragons shouldnt be on sand especially as babies and the next time i went in there they had reptile carpet down. And it helps putting it in a money perspective. they seem to listen more then.

i wish you the best of luck. just remember...they are looking for experience you can prove you have...and hoping you can help put money in their pockets...we got a lady at petsmart that used to work at the indy zoo with the reptiles, but they wont let her change any of the cages...hopefully they arent so strict at a small town pet stores as they are at a corporate chain pet store.
