New gecko. 
hi everyone. i’m new on here but not new to owning reptiles. i’ve always wanted a tokay and finally decided to get one. the pet store he was kept in left him in kinda poor condition because he’s rather skinny. i’m thinking he was probably a wild caught, but i’m not sure. i can sometimes pet his head, but for the most part he’s a typical mean tokay. i see all these huge fat geckos on the web and want mine to look like him. lol all he’s been fed is crickets and that seems to be all that he’ll take, as i offered him a meal worm and he just looked at it funny. any advice? i’ve also been putting a vitamin supplement on the crickets and making sure they’re good and fed before hand. here’s a pic of the little guy:

sounds like your doing everything good so far. just remember to keep a warmer basking spot for him and keep the humidity up and water on the sides and decor in the tank for him to drink. mine eats a staple of crickets but she’ll take a superworm every now and then (she’s a big girl, close to a foot long). make sure you are dusting with a calcium supplement as well as the multivitamin. how much is he eating? he should eat as a juvenile daily about 6-12 crickets. mine eats about 12 every over day now. i need to get a new picture of her when she’s out of hiding. the weight could just be because he is still young and will fatten up as he gets older. if you think he was wild caught i would suggest a fecal test since wild caughts usually harbor a lot of parasites. but since he’s eating i wouldn’t rush to do it. you can also feed wax worms if you’re worried about weight. they are high in fat and are good for adding weight, just don’t feed to many at a time, just a couple each feeding.

he ate 8 crickets the night before last. i’ll have to get some calcium. and i think he may be a she, because i see no preanal pores. plus it’s sort of on the darker side? also, in the store it was kept with 5 other geckos. could it be that they kept only females to keep them all from fighting?

they could have but you can’t always be for sure if all the animals in teh tank are one sex...especially with reptiles. i work at a pet store and we don’t check the reptiles or birds. as far as sexing, color doesn’t always tell you. my female is very bright (originally thought she was male). just look for the preanal porse and for two bulges below the vent for a male. a male will also be much more vocal and call quite frequently, whereas females will rarely call especially if kept singlely. i’ve only heard mine call (’bark’) once, and that was because she saw my bearded dragon whose tank is about 3 feet away.

hmm. well, it barks all the time, but never calls. i’m sure it’s still adjusting to the new environment though. i just want to know what to name it, haha. it’s started to gain a little weight in the tail and the back leg bones aren’t sticking out as bad. got a plump little belly now. :]

You need a unisex name lol! Or two names that sound alike. That’s what I did, sitll doing. I have a Tokay I got as a baby. We started calling it Sabrina, later at 6 mos my friend looked at it and said "It has pores it must be a boy" I named him Sebastian. Since then I learned both sexes have pores but only males secrete wax from them. Now I’m waiting until he turns a year old to see if he produces wax or not, then I will know for sure and will name him/her appropriately!

to get mine nice and plump I have fed him silkworms, superworms, mealworms, crickets and waxworms ! Mostly now he eats crickets and about once every 3 months he gets a bowl with some waxworms.

Looks like a girl to me if your lizard is an adult. How many inches long is it from snout to end of its tail? I have an adult female Tokay that’s 9in. Her pores look similar to yours but she also has small calcium sacs on the sides of her neck. I’ll show you what mine looks like so you can compare.

Andfsoccr04 I think yours might be male. I can’t tell but is that wax coming out of its pores? Take your gecko and rub your finger across its pores and see if you can feel wax. If you do its a boy. If there is no wax coming out and its an adult, its a girl.

Also, I would try waxworms. They are totally different from mealworms and most reptiles go nuts for em !
