 Tokay Gecko Calls

Hi all,

I’m thinking about getting a tokay gecko. The only thing that worries me is their "bark." If I plan on having it in my bedroom, how loud are they? Do they bark all the time? Males or Females?

if you get a female, they will rarely if ever call. i’ve only heard mine call a couple times, adn that was only because i was playing on my computer and found a male tokay mating call and played it. she went crazy. but other than that, she never calls. she’s barked once at my bearded dragon cause they can see each other, but thats it. from what i hear males will call pretty frequently most of the time, so i would go with a female if you want it to be quieter.

Can you please tell me how old a male tokay must be in order to start calling? Also, will he call if there is a female present in the tank? I WANT my gecko to call and have been waiting well over a year now to see it happen. I fear that perhaps my he is really a she! Thanks!

Mine was about 2 years old when he started calling. I’m not sure about the female thing, my guy has never seen one

We have a pair that live together and at certain times of the year he calls once or twice a day. Other months, he doesn’t call at all. In any case, it’s not really annoying. In fact, it’s kind of fun to listen too.
