How grumpy are they? this isnt my usual forum but anywhoo.. i think tokays are beautiful animals and have thought about getting one.. but from everything ive come up with theyre grumpy and dislike being handled.. but the only one ive come into contact with.. for lack of better wording.. is completely lovable.. it belongs to a friend.. its constantly out with her.. likes being touched and held and basically the exact opposite of everything ive read.. can with regular human interaction can most become relatively mild mannered? and i know that most bite.. a lot but ive probably been bitten by worse. i have a feeling im getting my hopes up.. but it doesnt hurt to ask.

How grumpy are they? Most tokays are imports and very nasty. They bite and do not mind to hold on for a long time. I have heard of tame tokays, but most of them are CB that were handled from birth. I guess adults could possibly be tamed, but it would take a lot of work and many bites.

How grumpy are they? They are extremely aggressive and very hard to read apparently. One day they may seem quite passive only to turn.
They are very interesing and lovely to look at. I have birds that I can’t hold, but I still receive alot of satisfaction and joy from owning them.
If you are experienced you would probably enjoy them and may be able to read them too. Some are more aggressive than others.
My info. comes from some that own them as I contemplated on getting one myself. But I’m not experienced enough at this time.

How grumpy are they? My girlfriend thought I had cut myself with a knife the first time she saw a bite wound on my hand from our Tokay. I don’t know if its to do with the shape of their teeth, but Tokay wounds are typically bleeders.

How grumpy are they? Yeah, I seen my big male bite the head off a picky mouse clean. It was crazy. I hand feed mine most of the time and I’ve had him grab my thumb and put indentations in my nail. My female just kind of puffs up and growls a bit, but rarely bites. I think they are actually cool pets if you don’t mind a more hands off animal.

How grumpy are they? Yep, just very nervous breed. I can’t blaim them though...Mine run and hide when i come into my reptile room....Got to sneak up even to see them.
But mine are not agressive, only deffensive. They have to be really provoked. Mine have a lot of greenery to hide in and stuff t hide behind, so they have a home comfortable enough that they can hide rather than fight. Now if i start moving the stuff and trying to grab them and start feeling like their is not escape...it’s on.

mine is pretty cool. i respect animals and their nature, but at the same time this is my pet, so i dont intrude by grabbing it and holding it and trying to train it. instead now and then i stroke it starting at its tail and then over time get closer to its back. i never tried stroking it from the head - i wont take that risk, but i can come at it from the side and back and pet its, tail, feet and up to its back, but thats as far as i personally go for now.
maybe one day it’ll get to the point of my stroking its head, who knows.... but patience.
when it starts to breathe heavily and looks back at me, and takes a few steps to walk off... i stop
its a relationship of mutual respect and understanding. lol

How grumpy are they? yeah I don’t try to hold mine anymore. we have an understanding though. it’s cute if one of his branches falls down he will go to the other side of the tank and wait for me then i’ll stick it back up and then he goes back to his spot. He sticks to the front of the tank when he’s hungry.

How grumpy are they? just got a new iggy but i have some experience with tokays, have them in my wildlife class at school, ive spent the last 8 weeks with them and i can pick them up without them biting me(unless someone previously pissed them off) but on most days both of them sit with me the whole 2 hours of class on my shoulder and look around, or they hide in my backpack, really cute cause they come out all black ^_^

How grumpy are they? I know this is a relatively old thread....but from what I’m reading...are tokays REALLY that "UNTOUCHABLE"?
I managed to tame my 2 year old afrock (my retic doesn’t count...she LOVES human contact!) through consistent handling (never been tagged...but boy did he aim for my face!)....will this be "preparation" enough to tame tokays?
In other words, are tokays harder to tame than pythons?
Thanks

Hello... Tokays are naturally feisty and don’t like to be held!! I have 5 tokays... 3 of them are CB they came from my female, the female I got as adult, and the papa I got from a pet shop as a baby... They are all nice, duly because I handle mine daily... Heres a picture of me handling them!

thats kul i hope i can hold mine like that one day. I would think that being raised from hatch they would be more friendly. i have ahd mine for about a month and she has calmed down alot when we first got her she would come after you when you put your hand in the cage. now i can do what ever i want in there and even touch her tail . hoping to get babies so they could be held. but do not underestimate there bite i had two tagues that were a good size that wern’t as bad. its lik being bit by a little gator that won’t let go. But it seems that alot of people on this site are breeding them, mabye you can find one in your area to get a baby from.

How grumpy are they? I’ve got mine much less nippy just over the 2 days since I got him. Maybe I’m just lucky but we’re gloves and let them bite all they want and just gently pet them and sort of move them around like you’re examining them. After awhile they’ll be less bothered by it and if they’re young so the bites don’t hurt, use your hand later on. They’ll be nervous at first cause it looks different, so you might get nipped. It’s also a good idea to carry them around maybe let them see other people a little. Nothing chaotic though. They’ll be stressed definitely but they’ll adapt.
