 Worried

I dont think that Larry is eating. I put 10 crickets in his cage everynight. His tank is a 40 gallon wide. With repta bark as a substrate that covers majority of the tank and the remainging part that is not covered with the substrate is just glass that i have his cave on. Its wierd because he doesnot come out of his cave. I have only seen him out twice, and when I spotted him he would go to his cave. He would only eat if a cricket went into or in front of the opening of the cave. I am really worried that he is not eating. Am I just overeacting because I have a lazy gecko. Or is it a problem?

How old is Larry? If he’s full grown, 10 crickets a night is probably too many for him to eat anyway.

If you still find almost all of the crickets there in the morning (assuming he’s the only gecko in there) then you might want to take him to the vet, but if they’re missing in the morning, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Is he a dark or a light color when he comes out? If he’s a light color...then he’s not probably not stressed. If he’s dark, check your temperatures and humidity (probably not a bad idea to do even if he’s light).

One of my geckos only comes out on occassion. She’s eating, but she likes to stay in her hide. The other one is almost always out of the hides (even if she’s behind a plant). Both are as healthy as can be.

I don’t know how old Larry is. I think he is just shy of 8 inches. I really don’t have the guts to go measure him. He is the only gecko in there. The temp is about 82 or 83 degrees and the humidity is about 64. Usually at night he is dark but I just checked him and he was light. So I guess he just rather stay in his hide than go anywhere else. Would it help if I bought another hide to put on the other end.

Thanks for the help andrew

I meant measure the cage...not him...haha. I wouldn’t measure the temp of my gecko either.

He’s probably out a lot more than you realize. I’ve woken up in the middle of the night to find both my geckos stuck to the screen on top of my cage...but then I don’t see one of them at all during the day.

You should get the humidity a little higher than what you have it...around 70-90%. Just mist once or twice more per day.

You could try taking the hide out and putting more plants in if you’d like to see him more often. If he doesn’t get stressed, you should be okay. If he does get stressed, just put the hide back in there.

Now that I am not as worried I have a few more questions.
1. What could I use for multivitamin and calcium?
2. Is it possible to tell how old?
3. How to tell if male or female?
4. Can two fit in 40 gallon tank?
5. Is it ok to put tokay in a pet carrier or 10 gallon cage while cleaning cage?
6. How do you post pics?
7. If I gave you a pic would you be able to tell if it is able to eat pinkies?
Well thats it Thanks for all the help!!!!

1. I use some sort of cricket dust I picked up at the local pets store.
2. Probably not. You can have a 2 month old gecko that wasn’t fed well the size of a 1 month old gecko that was fed perfectly (arbitrary numbers, but the point stands).
3. Look for large pores just past the vent. If you have some, it’s a male. If you don’t, it’s a female.
4. That should be perfect.
5. You should be alright. Just try not to leave them in there too long.
6. Click the image button, paste the url, click the image button (now the close image button) one more time.
7. I was researching beardies and was told never to feed it anything wider than the space between it’s eyes. I realize we’re dealing with tokays, not beardies...but I figured it was a safe bet to go with anyway. My two geckos are about 9 inches and can eat pinkies.
