 MBD in spine?

I’ve never really heard of it...but I noticed Toki has a little...um...well his spine’s kinda crooked. Like this...It’s hard to get a pic of. Or is it normal in vipers?

No, that definitely doesn’t look normal. It looks like it’s back somehow got pinched or something. How is your tank set up? Could a rock or something have rolled onto it’s back? I haven’t seen anything like that for a viper gecko before. I can only imagine that it was injured in some way and that it’s not MBD. Try upping the calcium a tad and see what that does. It could very well be some calcium issue too.

=(
Well, I first noticed it right after I bought him on the way home...
He’s in a 10 gal tank with 3 hides, water, some sticks, a plant, and repticarpet. I feed him 1-3 crix [almost] everyday dusted with pure calcium...He’s about...hmm...well almost 5 months old.

His home...there are a few rocks in there, but his spine’s been like this since before I got him home...and if anything fell I would notice.

If it is a pre-existing condition and it seems to get around ok, then I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Keep up with regular calcium dusting just to be sure. It could just be a birth defect or something too.

My baby Gargoyle gecko has that same crook. I’ve been told it is a birth defect, most likely from a large temperature change while it was an egg. My gecko is doing just fine, and climbs and walks around perfectly. I wouldn’t be to worried unless it effects his movements.

i have a small leopard gecko that never grew bigger than four inches and also has the little pinch looking spot. he was awful at catching food for a long time. i had to hand feed him with an eyedropper for almost four months. he’s gotten better at catching his own food and gets around fine. my vet also said it could be a birth defect.

its not something all vipers have/get as non of my 11 have it and the few who have passed never had it..
it could be alot of things though... a birth defect, old MBD issue, an accident(like him falling or something falling on him.. before you got him) but like everyone said already if hes getting around and eating fine there really shouldnt be any cause for too much concern.. he may eventually get a bit of arthritus in his back due to it but its not a for sure thing

It must be a birth defect then. Because I got him...sorry her I found out it’s a girl...she was only 2-3 weeks old. And there is a warp in her pattern you can see...
I guess I’ll just keep a close eye on her for the rest of her life =P
She’s almost full grown now and seems fine. Since I think I’ve got a gravid leo on my hands that I might take in to the vet for a check up, I might take Toki in too just to have my vet give me an ok on it and tell me if there’s anything I should know about it.

our leopard gecko gekk has a crooked back.. i know shane has always been super careful about her care since she was his first little leo. hes had her since fourth grade and shes been doing fine.. she just sort of waddles.
we talked to a vet about it and he suspects that it may have been a lack of proper vitamins.. 12 years ago leos werent nearly as common as they are now and there werent supplements made just for them.. he used a mix of regular calcium and vitamin mixes with her. either that or she may just not absorb nutrients properly, or it may have been a birth defect.. its hard to tell.. but right now shes happy and healthy and doing fine. lol

 MBD in spine?

K so, old post. She’s eating and acting fine, and she’s still growing since I posted this. I’ve noticed now that her tail is usually pressed against the right side of her body. She can straighten it out, but usually doesn’t. She even walks like this...should I consider a vet visit? I can call my vet to see what they think, and it’s a great place, but they like money and I don’t want to spend what I don’t have to...and what could they really do about this anyway?

It sounds like a birth defect. Your husbandry sounds great so it shouldn’t be a nutritional issue. I had a leopard gecko hatch out about 7 years ago missing the last centimeter of her tail; it looked like it had been chopped off but there was no wound. As she grew, her spine started to twist like she had a gecko version of scoliosis. It stopped progressing when she reached adult size. She’s kind of lumpy looking, but is still alive and seems happy and healthy. Your gecko looks like she may have something similar. The only fix I can think of would be surgery which isn’t really possible on a little lizard. As long as she seems happy and healthy, I don’t think a vet visit is in order. If the spinal condition does start affecting her quality of life, euthanasia would probably be best. I can’t think of any veterinary treatments that would help.
