Help, gecko trapped on glue mousetrap!

a small(3 inch) transparent gecko got trapped in a mouse glue trap in the garage. While trying to free it from the trap the gecko’s tail broke off. We had to put petroleum jelly on part of it’s body to keep it from sticking to itself. We have it in a plastic container with ventillation holes, with acces to water (it has slurped a few drops from the floor of the container) and a bit of crushed dry cat food. It is not eating, but looking better now that we have it under a light and over a hot water bottle. It is sunday and the vets and pet stores are closed. does anyone have any advice on keeping this little gecko alive?

He won’t eat cat food. If he still has glue on him try rinsing it off. Put a little bit of neosporin (no pain killers) on his tail and he should be ok to set free. I can’t think of a way to get the glue off of his skin safely. Hopefully water will work. My vet said a TINY bit of Johnson’s babywash (10% babywash to 90% water) will lubricate and I guess in this case clean. Just be really careful not to get it in his mouth or eyes or anything. Don’t want it in his body. Maybe a q-tip and you can scrub him off a little. Tell us how it goes

In the future when a reptile sticks to a mouse or fly trap, use cooking spray to remove it. Trust me, it works without difficulty and makes stickiness irrelevant. You could try to wipe a little on the gecko now if it still has glue on it.

Geckos eat live things, preferably soft-bodied insects like crickets, but unless it goes back out into the wild soon the gecko could simply up and die of shock or stress from the experience and being held captive. If you are certain the gecko is no longer sticky in the near future, let it go and let the wilderness take its course.
