Okay, this is a little embaressing

I was at the petstore the other day and they told me of a predicament. They got two new pictus geckos and one started laying eggs. But they don’t know the gender of both. They sold one earlier that day and I offered to sex the remaining. After letting the employee briefly attain the poor lizard, I looked at its crotch... Low and behold I could not figure out what gender it was.

At first I noticed that there was no open v-vent. Cool, I said female. But then I saw that it did have a small, but noticeable bulge between the crotch and tail. It didn’t extend out far enough to both sides of the tail, but it was still a bulge.. SO I became very confused and said I was undetermined then.

They said they also didn’t know the age of our mystery pictus, but it did indeed look like an adult by size alone. I mean, have you seen hatchling pictus? they’re tiny!

So yeah, um, to help me rectify this problem, I looked at caresheets... But they gave me very mixed info - even so far as saying ’a male has bulge and an open vent, but a female has a bulge!’

How do you sex a pictus?

As P. picta doesn’t have pores, it can often be hard to sex them when very young. However, males will have extremely prominent bulges, even at an early age. As long as it visibly looked as though there was a large almost "double" bulge, then I would say male. Females may seem to have a uniform center "bulge", while males will be very distinct in having two hemipene bulges on either side.

Both are photos of a male’s hemipenal bulge. Anything different than that, or smaller, then I would say female.

it was smaller. Could you post a picture of a female for comparison? The whole lack of pores and the size of the bulge really threw me off. For a second there I thought it would’ve been straightforward like a leo

Hey,

I don’t have any photos of a female, but here’s a link with some. Even though the second gecko appears to have a bulge, it is not large enough to be male.
