 Mediterranean Gecko/ lost tail

My son just caught a Mediterranean Gecko two days ago. But, he lost his tail. The weird thing was, no one was around when it happened. Is there any reason why a gecko would shed it’s tail without handling? We don’t have cats or dogs so I know nothing else was messing with the cage. I was going to make my son let him go the next morning, but I didn’t know if I should let its tail grow back first. My son is trying to find any excuse to keep the little guy, so any advise would be helpful. Is it okay to keep a caught gecko, with parasites and all?

stress from being captive can make a gecko taildrop. So can having the gecko squeeze itself between a tank accessory and the ground/wall. There have been stories of leopard geckos loosing their tails to freak accidents when a tank log or accessory was tipped over by the gecko and it landed on the tail.

You could keep it, but with the parasites and being ’caged’ for the rest of its life, the stress levels could make the gecko’s life much shorter. It’s all up to you. Personally, if your son really wants a gecko, you should let go of this one, bleach the tank, air it out, and do a month or two on research of a beginner gecko species (like a leo, AFT, or crested gecko) that you can purchase healthy from a pet store. This is provided you study on the pet store to ensure you’re getting a healthy one.

Buying a healthy animal in Sicily is almost impossible, the caught one probably had less parasites than the ones in the store. I still haven’t decided what to do. The little guy seems to be doing better now, but I will probably let him go tonight. I fed him a beatle and then he didn’t want to get off my hand. He’s really friendly. I gave him one of my ceramic dipping bowls with a bitt of water in it and he’s been laying in it ever since. Thanks for the advise.

I can’t believe it, but the gecko’s tail is already growing back! It’s only been two days. I thought it would take like a month. We decided to keep him until his tail grows back and at this rate he’ll be gone in a couple of weeks at the most!
