Little things i need help with.

im just trying to get some information on rhacodactylus chahoua. and on some of the care sheets they have said because they are nocturnal they don’t really need to have any lighting. but some say it is good to have to help with creating day and night also to help with temps and humidity.
so i was wondering what people thought was a good idea. and whether or not you could advise me what to get.

also any aditional advice you might think its worth me knowing would me amazing.

thanks for any help.

I keep my adults in a 20 long on end right now. When they pair up they will be getting an enclosure that is 40 gallons. I do not keep any lights at all as they are not needed. Females can be a little aggressive. Night temps are 72-73, day temps are 77-78. Humidity is 60-80% (usually 72%). I use a piece of driftwood, cork bark and fake plants for decoration. Every rhac tank I have has a dish with water in it for humidity reasons. Any other questions?

I personally disagree. As they do sleep during the day it is debated if they need the light or do not. I did a little experiment over a year of time. 1/3 of my geckos got 2.0 uvb, 1/3 got 5.0 uvb and 1/3 got light from an over the counter compact florescent of the same wattage as the uvb lights. All the lights were on a timer and they all got the same amount of day light. They were all offered the same amount of food and food types. All the geckos who got the uvb lights did MUCH better. They ate better and there color was much nicer and there cal sacs were bigger. The ones who did not get the uvb ate less and were duller in color there weight gain total was also 1/2 of what the ones with the lighting gained. I never noticed a difference between the 2.0 and the 5.0 lighting.

I do suggest some sort of lighting for day light and it is best, IMO, to use a timer and uvb but a normal compact florescent low watt bulb for a day cycle. But this is just in my exp. and it is not something that there has been a lot of looking into by the big breeders.

Hope this helped a little. And remember this is just my opinion and not against anything anyone else says. I just don’t 100% agree that they don’t get any benefit from the uvb lighting. =)

thanks for the reply’s. so basically it doesnt matter too much if i dont have a light it is just down to if i prefer one or not.

Also because they are arboreal would i still only put a heat mat on half of the bottom or does it need to be all on the mat.?
were do you put yours
would glass t-rex glass terrariums be alright?
and the last one is what supliments do you use for them and how do you give it to them?
sorry about all the questions just there is alot of conflicting info.

Little things i need help with.

if you NEED a heat source for arboreal geckos a lamp is the way to go not a mat.

t rex glass terrariums, exoterra, regular all glass aquariums, acrylic aquariums/terrariums they all work.

most use a pure calcium powder and then a multi vitamin supplement.. they are usually either dusted onto the crickets(or other insect prey) or mixed in a diet powder mix you add water too

personally i dont have chahouas but i do have other rhacs.

--- A small low watt (15) heat bulb for a basking area is needed for winter if your house gets lower than 72. IMO, Chewies do best with a small basking spot just like gargs. do. So if you can give them a basking spot of about 78-82 they will be much happier.

---Yes

---Cal w/ out d3 on crickets and in the CGD most of the week a muli-vit on crickets once a week.

I have been keeping them for awhile and I have never used any kind lights but I do keep the room at a certain temp. Like I saidbefore lights are a total option and not required. If you do not think you will get good looking chahoua’s without lights then I can post some pics of amazing chahoua’s that have never seen a light in their life.
