 New gecko owner needs clarification

Hey i bought a geko on monday, the guy told me how to care for her and what to do...im using soil substrate with a log to climb and tree to hide for her, however the tank keeps steaming up and she cant hold onto the side...i also managed to look inside the tank without her jumping out lol and noticed white mould growing on the bottom of the log..there is a lamp in the tank and i have a heat mat too...she seems really happy in there basking on the log im jus worried as to why its steaming up and geting really wet, also why the ground grew mould...also i was told to chuck some crickets in their and if she hadnt eaten them in 5 days to clean them out..but all the lit ive read says feed 3-4 times weekly but doesnt say how many.....please help a damsil in distress.....thanks

Well first off, what type of gecko is it, what size tank are you keeping them in and you should have come here first. If there is mold in the tank, it should be taken out ASAP. Crickets should only be left in for 15-20 mins. They can bite your gecko. And, where did you get the soil?

what kind of gecko did you get? most of my adult geckos will eat about 6-12 crickets every other day. i feed the babies and juveniles every day about 6, goes on how much they decide to eat.
the steaming and mold is probably because you don’t have enough ventilation. how is you tank set up as far as ventilation goes? if you are misting just mist less so that there isn’t as much standing water in the soil and it just absorbs enough to stay moist, not soaked.

yea big one... what king of gecko is it?

the steaming and mold is due to high humidity warm temps and not enough ventalation in the cage.

and honestly 99% of the people that work in a pet store/department dont know what they are talking about for proper care of the reptiles... i only say that because i myself work in a pet store and know a few others who also do and know what they are talking about

hey guys thanks for the replies....she is jus over 4 months old...and was told that she was a sandstone but loking at her colouring and comparing to pictures she is more than likely a marbled one....i fed her 2 on monday and found them dead in the tank she didnt eat them....i have cleaned out the mould and put new soil in..i got the soil from pet shop and had to soak it in water first for it to expand....the tank is 15 1/2 inch high by 10 1/2 inch deep by 8 1/2 inch wide will be getting her a new one soon..pet shop guy said she would be ok in there for a few months....the tank has a lclosed lid with light in it and vents on top...it was previously used for a corn snake....a friend who has a tarantula suggested buying some mesh and replacing the lid with that???? how would i do that without her getting out.....the temp in the tank is between 75 and 80 f when the light is on and drops to bout 70 jus with the heat mat at night....i took he water bowl out thinking that was making to condensation but that has made no diffrence...

The gecko you have is certainly a marbled gecko. I made a caresheet for it on this site somewhere (let me find it). Link

The problem with the molding has to do with the tank lid. However I need to warn you that, since the tank needs a higher humidity, you’re going to have a hard time keeping it up once you get the eventual mesh lid since all the moisture is going to escape. Most pet stores have a mesh lizard lid in their lizard department that fits their fish tanks. Since you’re getting a new tank in the future (which should be 20 to 30 gallons for one marbled gecko), you can simply get the mesh lid then. Escapes wont happen provided you know where the lizard is when you open the tank, but there are optional lid clamps you can buy as well (ask the employee of the store or look online)

I suggest in your future that you invest in some fake tank accessories. Ie, a 17" fake log, some fake pothos vines. I can assure you that those do not mold and look fine in the tank. That’s what I ended up doing in the end for my golden gecko, as I had similar issues.

I hope this, and my caresheet, help.

Btw, the hot spot in the tank should be between 88 and 90 F. A long time ago I put 90 to 95 by accident in the caresheet and edited it, but the edit never went through for some blasted reason.

Good to hear your gecko is doing good, I would suggest a leopard gecko or a fat-tailed gecko for your daughter, these geckos do jump around when they are babies but once they get used to you and mature they are very easy to handle and care for.
