 What kind should I get?

O.K. so i got my first leopard gecko three years ago, She just died over the summer of either an impaction or internal parasites, I was looking to get another, should i stick with leopard geckos for the time being or get a house gecko, I think they are pretty cool to. I was interested in tokays but they are quite expensive. What should i get? which lives longer under proper care, and what should i use as a substrate this time so that i don’t have to repeat what happened last time?

You should either stick with a a leopard gecko, or get a crested gecko because they’re both for beginners and they’re really nice. If you stick with a leopard gecko, than use viti-sand or paper towels. Cresteds don’t have to eat eat live food, but they have to be misted out every other day. [:

..leopard gecko, than use viti-sand or paper towels

paper towels good viti sand or any other looose particle substrate for leos ARE BAD thers also reptile carpet or ceramic tiles(not the shiny ones)

but what you get next all depends on you and the cage you have... if you want something handleable theres leos like you had crested geckos or african fat tail.. if you dont care if you can handle them or not yeah you can go with house geckos or anoles.. or you can always go the way of tree frogs or pac man frogs..

if you have a longer cage and want to keep it that way then you want to go with the pac man frogs leo or african fat tail

if you have a tall tank or turn you long tank on end so it is tall you can go with crested tree frogs house gecko or anoles.

if you use your old tank be sure to fully sanitize it with either a 10% bleach solution or a 5% ammonia solution

O.k. so I want be able to handle my new gecko so I should stick with a leo?

If you only put a thin layer of sand on the tank bottom would that make a diffrence? What do you think about reptile carpet?

I have a ten gallon long tank right now that i did clean out with a watered down bleach solution. I also have $200 from my birthdays last year and the year before that i have been saving to upgrade my tank and stuff. Is a 20 gallon to big for a leo?

We also just moved into a new house and there will probs be constuction on it in the spring sould i get a gecko now or wait until threr done?

the ammount of sand on the bottom doesnt matter.. they still lick and lunge at food when fed. reptiel cerpet works though some people dont like i because their teeth can get stuck on it. but theres also the choice of ceramic tile(not the shiny stuff) for a more natural look also

a 20 gallon is better... if you want to go for another leo go for a long but if you look into and like crested geckos as they are handleable also then go for the high

if theres gonna be alot of noise and moving of the cage id probably wait till its close to or totaly done

OK should i get two or just stick with the one since i don’t want to breed and i don’t want to risk to females and to males is just a stupid idea.

just get one.. the substrate might be ok for the leo if you wet it down and let it dry but if you leave it loose no its not ok.. though with wetting it down i dont know if its going to be too rough and possibly scrape up the leos chin when he goes for food

it would not be ok for a crestie as they live in humid environments not arid

I had te excavator sand in my tank for a while, and at appeared to be ok at first. But I noticed how (even when I packed it down and let it harden) it would crumble and collect in the bottom as a rough sand type thing. If you were to get this wet it would clump up again and harden. Now imagine your leo lunging for a cricket, or just sniffing it’s environment. If it got any in its mouth (there is a thin layer covereing the entire bottom) it would get wet, then clump together and harden inside the gecko... So i stopped using it, and never will again. I suggest using reptile carpet, or tile. paper towel is good too.

Thanks and reading more about it it said not to use it with an under tank heater which i have cause it will cause excess heat to build up which would not be good for its little feet. i think i will go with carpet. Also i found this tank on a wooden stand for 20 dollars at our school yard sale and i don’t know if i should get it, its 20 gallons which is a good size, but it was used as an aquarium before, so i would "bleach" it with water, and replace the pebbles at the bottom it also has a pipe thing running through for a filter, i would try to remove it but idk if you can, i will keep you posted i can buy it Friday. Thanks for the input!
