Cresties eat bugs and fruits, need a 20gallon tall tank minimum, a lower temp (room temp. as long as its between 70*-80* is perfect. Do not get the temps above 80* for long periods of time, crestie may die from it). They have a prehensile tail (they can hang upside down using just their tail), they also stick to glass and such. They are arboreal, and need fake or real plants in the tank and such. Aft (I dont have one of these, but I was considering one at one point). Aft’s need a long tank (not quite sure how many gallons, probably 15-20gallon minimum), they will need lamps for warmer temperatures (again, im not sure about the temps). They do not have a prehensile tail, and cannot stick to glass. They eat mainly crickets (no fruit like cresties). They are terrestrial so they need a long tank, with hides on the ground. Research would be your best bet. I pretty much covered the basics, but before you get either one, research a lot. I myself have a crestie, because I prefer how they look compared to a aft. Also the fact that I could feed them more than just bugs was a big plus. I feed my crestie crickets 2times a week, and that is plenty. |

Crested geckos need an enclosure that is higher than it is long since they’re arboreal. They come from New Caledonia, and require cooler temperatures with an average summer temp around 77 and the coolest winter temp dropping down to 68. They need a diet with 20% protein and will occasionally eat fruit along with a regular diet of dusted feeder insects. Humidity should be up around 70 to 75%. Minimum enclsure size for one is a 20 gallon tall. If the tail falls off, they cannot regenerate it. African Fat-tailed geckos are native to West Africa and require a much warmer climate. The temp should be 77 on the cool side and 90 on the warm side. They only eat live feeders, and need a diet with protein that’s about 40%. Humidity should be at 65%. Unlike the Leopard gecko, they can tolerate much higher humidity and actually prefer it, so should be housed on a substrate that can provide it. Some people say the minimum enclosure size should be a 10 gallon, but I would strongly reccomend a 20 gallon long for one. These guys can’t climb like the standard "gecko" although will climb on logs and rocks. Their tails tend to come off more easily, although do regenrate their tail which will not look like the original. I personally like the look of these guys over Leopards, but it’s really not fair to compare them to Cresteds since they’re really in a whole different category. Both are nocturnal. ~k |
