 New Fat tail

I’ve never owned a lizard before although I have 2 snakes.
Paid for my new Fat tailed Gecko today, picking him up tomorrow. A real beauty, nice and fat, great colour, really healthy. I found him at Pets Unlimited. I had looked at another one at a mall pet store and it was a real shame...sham. Heat rock in the tank, bad skin, under fed, and they wanted twice as much.
I almost got the Madagascar Ground Gecko they had on display, but I stayed with the fat tail.
He will look very nice in my office. A good conversation piece for my clients and a tax right off as well. Sweet.

On the suggestion of the guy at the pet store I threw some birdseed in the compressed coconut shell substrate I’m using, it expands in water and looks like soil.
That was 3 days ago and now I have a great looking grass filled enclosure for the little guy. This stuff keeps the humidity up great as well.
I checked around and none of the seeds will grow anything toxic for the animal, it is food for birds after all.

I’ll post some pics once he is in the tank.

I’d get rid of the coconut shell substrate. They can get impacted and I’ve also seen a piece of the it wedged into a leopard geckos eye before. I’d use something else like eco-earth or a bed-a-beast.

Is that the same stuff as Care Fresh? Its this soft recycled paper type stuff.
I use it with my snakes and its great but didnt know if I could use it with my Fat tail.

I have no idea what to look for to check for the sex.
Maybe I’ll just ask if it would rather watch Fight Club or The Notebook and see what it picks.

The stuff I found wedged in a leopards eye is made out of coconut shell and is just little hard pieces of it. That’s why I wouldn’t use it because of impaction and the whole eye thing.

What is the best time to feed them, night time?
I gave him some super worms but e showed no interest. I know at the pet store they were feeding crickets.
He ate 3 days ago, he is nice and fat so maybe he just isnt hungry.

Yeah I think the best time to feed them is at night, since they are nocturnal. Beautiful gecko you have there =]

Tried super worms again tonight and still no interest. I will have to try meal worms, maybe the supers are to big?
I’ll have to try crickets as well.

They said he was a great eater at the pet store. Its been 4 days since he ate last.

you may just have to feed crickets.. out of the four i have none eat mealworms, one will eat supers, all will eat crickets.. theyre very sensitive to motion.. crickets move more, so they have more interest in them. theyre also easily stressed from moving.. many wont eat for up to a week or so after going to a new home.

i just dust mine and put them in the tank at night and pull out any leftovers in the morning.. all of my afts seem to prefer taking their time hunting down crickets.. mine average 8-10 each per feeding and i feed about ever other day (monday, wednesday, friday).. my numbers work out well with 3 dozen split between all of mine.. try getting a dozen or two at a time and keep them in one of those cricket keepers.. if i have to keep crickets i feed them a mix of carrots and cricket gutload. youll just have to see how much your gecko eats.. some are pigs and others hardly eat anything in comparison.

How do you stop them from getting everywhere when putting them in the tank?
I have my tank in my office at work and my co workers arent going to like crickets all over the office. Although that may be funny.
Do you put the crickets in all at once and in the same tank? Some people feed their animals in a seperate container.
The little bugger sleeps all day, I took him out and he fell asleep in my hand. I took his hide cave out so I could see him and he just curled in a ball and went back to sleep, but then every morning the tanks substrate has been dug up. He must come out at 3AM and hunt.

lol.. mine do that. i have the tank all nice and pretty and wake up in the morning and they have every dug up.
the easiest thing for you to do would probably be to just buy a dozen at a time, sprinkle calcium powder in the bag, shake it, and just put them in the tank.. throw a piece of carrot or lettuce etc in the tank for the crickets to munch on and you should be set.. places here only sell in dozens (minus one shop i dont like).. but some places will do it simply by the number of crickets you want.. when you figure out about how much he eats then just buy the right amount for your little gecko.

Yup, Crickets it is.
Just dusted 12 and threw them in the tank, 5 minutes later there are none left.

A little concrned about him ingesting the soil, but it didnt seem like he did.

I thought he was lazy but man did he come alive with crickets running around. The last 5 or 6 he just stayed in his hide and when the cricks wandered in he devoured em.

Cool to see him in hunt mode.

He ate 12 like they were nothing, I guess I better by a weeks worth at a time. 40 or 50 a week to much?

Thanks again. There is always a learning curve with a new animal.
How long have you had Geckos?

ive only had them for about three years.. my boyfriend has kept them a lot longer.. hes had leopard geckos for 12 years, his oldest one is about 19 (it went through two other owners, but shes at least 19 now), and he still has his original leo who is now 12.
im relatively new to afts.. ive only have mine about 1 1/2 years. i have three females and one male.. ive thought about breeding.. but my male is a big pansy.. hes scared of the females.. he lets loose a shriek and runs away as fast as possible.
for me its convenient to buy crickets as i need them but you can keep them if you want. theyre just a pain to keep alive (for me anyway), they stink, and you need a relatively large container to keep them in.. if its convenient try asking the store he came from how much and how often he was fed.. it might give you a better idea on how many crickets youd need.

You should be feeding crickets over mealworms or super worms anyways. The exoskeleton on worms is hard on the digestive system and they are very fatty. Crickets are always the best way to go with any reptile. Anything else should be supplemented into the diet, so crickets all the time, superworms once a week or so.

You should also make sure that you gutload your crickets, and dust them every other feeding or so.

Astra1039 is wrong, you can use either crickets, mealies or supers as staples. mealies and crickets have the same amount of chittin. mealworm’s chittin is in their exoskeleton and cricket’s chittin is in their legs. superworms have less chittin and more meat(not more fat, but more meat), so they’re actually better than crickets and mealworms.

hi. i was just browsing the forums and thought id reply to this one.

DO NOT use the coconut fiber as substrate. the tiniest amount of moisture will gat it moldy just underneath the surface.

i have NEVER had that problem in my AFT tank. if you change out the bed a beast every few months like you’re supposed to, i guess it doesn’t happen unless it’s REALLY wet.
and bed a beast is the only thing i’ve heard that’s actually similar to their natural habitat.

i will say i used bed a beast for the land portion for my newt, and THAT molded because the tank was half water and waaay more humid/wet and water was always in it. but i changed that to pebbles, and all is well now.

it’s grass planted in bed a beast. or some kind of dirt. i’m almost positive it’s coconut stuff though.
and no, because it’s not similar to their natural enviroment.
i think what most people can agree is good is slate.
but i don’t own a leo, i just occasionally lurk on all of the forums.
