 QUICK QUESTION

I’m new here...SO i juss got my first AFT yesterday 1/30/08 and im so excited for the years to come...dont kno the sex yet shouldve did that before i put him in the tank but i was wondering when should i start handling him/her??? cuz i dont want to handle too soon, i wanna let him/her get used to evrything first..is it ok for me to start handling?? i picked him/her up today nd he/she ran out of my hand and hissed and went bak into the hide.hahaha, i found it really cute.lol. i think im gonna name him/her snickers cuz it reminds me of one with its colors..hehe This site is soooooo helpful and i’ve read evrything about AFT’s...you guys are the best. lookin to get another one pretty soon, its so addicting nd i havent even really been with my AFT yet.lol. Oh yea i have two corn snakes also(baby & chase) baby is a sweetheart and chase..well let’s juss say he lives up to his name. and he strikes at me evry time i go to pick him up and i’ve had him for four months now...but neway i kno im juss rambling on but if u can answer the question i would really appreciate it cuz i kno i would be getting the best info.

lol.. welcome to the forum! how old is your new aft?.. theyre very easy to sex.. theyre sexed like leopard geckos.. maes have a very pronounced set of v shaped pores and females dont.. just google leopard gecko genders under images and you should get pretty definitive comparison pics.
i think a week is overkill for not handling.. id wait about 4 days before serious handling. have you tried getting yours to eat yet? you know they feel comfortable and happy when they hunt.

Thanks...noone knew how old it was at the pet store wen i got it..seems as though i knew more bout AFT’s than they did actually..hehe. but im guesstimating no younger than 8months..idk. No i didnt start feeding yet, i didnt wanna put too much on him/her yet so i was gonna start feeding today plus i wanted to gutload the crickets for a day...but does the tail look fat enough??does he look pretty nourished?? i wanna get that tail REAL FAT!!lol

he looks very healthy! youre very fortunate to find one with a full tail! he looks to be good sized so id say youre right.. id say hes about a year or more.
i personally am not a fan of woodchips; im paranoid about one of my geckos grabbing a piece and trying to swallow it by mistake. im a dirt and cocofiber person (but i can three bricks of eco earth for 5.50 here.. so its very cheap).. lol.. my afts are diggers.. especially boomer. he fills up his water dish with dirt on a regular basis

we got a healthy AFT here people.lol.
Yea when i was pooring in the wood chips, i kinda realized that maybe this shouldnt be the flooring cuz if he goes for a cricket nd catches a wood chip nd swallows it, my heart will be broken but thanks for the heads up...i have to go get some eco-earth 2morro and throw those wood chips out..i dont think my local store sells eco-earth though, gotta go on the hunt for some. maybe i’ll juss use paper towel instead if i cant find any...we’ll see.

eco earth is that expandable coconut fiber bedding.. other places sometimes have it labeled differently. its brick shaped. you can also use unfertilized potting soil
