 Cold sore on lip??

Hi to all,

I had a fat tail that I rescued, rehabilitated and gave to a new informed and prepared owner about 9 months ago, it just "happened" to develop a sore on its lip resembling a cold sore, upon examining it myself it looked like he split it on a piece of cage furniture. I was just wondering what any of you that have more experience with this species think of this, please let me know.

I told him to remove any "sharp" objects from the enclosure as well as give it a warm water soak, any more suggestions?

its an abcess.. theyre hard to rid of. you have to get the egghead out of the sore first off (itll look like a hard crusty ball jammed into the lip).. then clean the tank and put down papertowels for a while.. after about 2 sheds you can switch to a more natural setting.. but KEEP THE HUMIDITY UP!!.. low humidity seems to eventually cause this issue. the skin sort of chaps and infection sets in.. and its very hard to get rid of.. i had to help with a gecko with this problem.. this did work.. but yeah.. humidity up is a must.. if you can please talk to a vet and get some antibiotics to fight the infection. you may also want to supplement regular feedings with repta-aid for added nutrition. my old herp vet retired and i havent been able to find another local one that will prescribe meds for a gecko.. so i was unable to get anything for the little aft i was dealing with.. but antibiotics will help the healing process!
good luck!

warm water soaks are good.
and the vet will probably give you baytril injections or medicine. (very common antibiotic they give to animals for general infections, and it’s always what we give herps at my animal hospital)
and like smurf said, keep the humidity up. it’s very possible that that led to it in some way.
or he could have missed a cricket and bit a piece of tank decor a little too hard. mine has done that, but never actually hurt himself from it..

and look up this one, there’s a lot of animals that benefit from neosporin, but i’m not sure about reptiles..i know newts are okay with it though.
so that could be another possible (and cheaper) solution
but don’t do that without reading more, because i’m not positive.

I adopted one from petco that had this problem as well. You can use neosporin, it is totally safe for reptiles. I also got some type of antibiotic ointment from the vet. Mine is totally healed now, just his bottom lip is kinda deformed looking. Stupid Petco!
