 Mouth Rot? =/

My AFT, Neal, has a bump on one of his upper jaws, and there’s black underneath. On his lower jaw, there’s a line of black, too. I feed him meal worms if that helps. =/

I’m taking him to the vet really, really soon, but your opinions would really help.

Anything I can do to help him up until I go to the vet?

Oh wow..that sounds bad.

How long has his mouth been like that?
What substrate is he on, what are the temp/humidity levels?

If he is on sand, then the general living on sand, ingesting it, etc will severely damage almost everything on your gecko..eyes, mouth, stomach, other innards, skin.
Sand is the worst substrate but people often mistake them to be from the desert so it’s a common but fatal mistake.
If the humidity is too low, it can cause chaffing around the mouth that eventually gets infected and can also be pretty nasty.
And I’ve read different things about mealworms biting animals but I think AFTs are tough enough for that not to bug them too much..I’m not sure though. I just know that if you feed mealworms to amphibians, you have to cut the heads off because their skin is so sensitive to bites.

But as for now, regardless of what caused the problem, put him on paper towels for substrate. Change out the paper towels daily to keep it clean and prevent any further infection and keep stuff from getting into the mouth. Keep the humidity really high. And I would say to monitor his feeding as much as possible and take out food when he’s done so that no creepy crawlies can bug him once he’s done eating.

The vet will probably give you Baytril to fight the infection and check his poop just to make sure everything else on his health is up to par.

the above post pretty much covered everything. if theres a pocket your vet should drain it for you.. a lot of petstore afts kept on sand in low humidity develop these issues.. sometimes it takes a while.. boomer had mouth issues when first brought him home.. but hes been doing good lately.
best of luck!

Follow up:

Vet said he has an aberration on his lip, a small infection. She said it wasn’t anything to worry about. She gave me an antibiotic/coccidia killer, and said he’d be ok. :)

He used to have sand but I changed it to newspaper (vet informed me of sand mistake). Thanks for your feedback!

That’s good.
Bed a Beast is also a really good substrate for him. It’s natural for him, looks better than newspaper and never really causes any complications in his health. It would be better for him than newspaper because it’s more like his African home.
:)

and you’re welcome!

Isn’t that like wood chips? I’m afraid his crickets might hide from him.

Noo, wood chips are bad.

Bed a beast/eco earth/blackearth is compressed coconut fiber.
It’s consistency is basically dirt..
It comes in a brick, you soak it in water and it grows like 10x it’s size. I just pull it out of the water, squeeze the excess water out of it and throw it in the tank while ember roams my tiny bathroom.
:)

it looks like..

the brown stuff.

that was my aft’s tank when i first got him a long time ago. It looks a lot different now but the dirt stuff is the same.

that’s fine. i think the ink can hurt some herps..but idk. paper towels are better, but i’m pretty sure the newspaper is okay? idk. someone else can verify that.

and just to clear you up, the crickets can’t/don’t hide in the dirt, so whenever/if you want to switch him over, it’s perfectly fine.
:)

I was told by my vet that newspaper is alright, so I think I should be good. Thanks for the info though!
