 Grumpy Gecko

I bought my second AFT about a 2 1/2 months ago from a pet store that had had her for almost 2 years. I don’t think that she was handled very much because all she does is hiss when I do anything with her cage. I have only held her twice since I got her for fear of being bit. My other AFT Guapo is the sweetest little guy ever. I don’t want to stress her out anymore than she already is so any ideas on how to make her more comfortable and maybe a little friendlier?

i would suggest very careful handling where she can see you pick her up and then place her on your bed in front of you, or whatever furniture is near her cage..i sleep next to my gecko, so i say bed..anyway, just let her be on her own but near you for about 10-20 minutes. Try doing that every other day and she’ll probably warm up to you slowly.
And be very gentle and walk slowly when you’re holding her so there’s nothing you’re doing to purposely aggravate her.

If she does bite, stay calm and gently put her back in the cage..just try again tomorrow and keep the wound clean. When she realizes that biting doesn’t do any good, she should stop.

And just as a side note...if you have her in the tank alone with Guapo, you run the risk of him overbreeding her. The male basically dominates the female and she will submit, eat less and slowly starve. It doesn’t always happen, it’s just a risk. I think the suggested number for co-ed housing is 2 or 3 females per male..

btw, your images didn’t work.

I have my two geckos in two separate 20- gallon tanks. They were actually housed together in the pet store over a year ago. I will try what you suggested an hope for the best. ps- i think the pics are working now. Just let me know if they are not

i almost did that with my gecko! a long time after I got him, his sister was still in the store and when I asked to hold her once, the guy pretty much just squeezed her and yanked her out of her hide so i just put her right back in because i didn’t want to stress her. They didn’t handle her well at all; I could tell she was miserable in their care..
but I didn’t have the money at the time to take her in, and by the time I did, she was gone..I hope she went to a good home.

And the pics worked.

best of luck on calming her down :)
