they cant be housed together.. but they seem to get along.. i know chubbs gets along with our leos when we have them out together.. afts are really laid back.. and easy to handle.. in all honesty chubbs is easier to handle than our leos sometimes.. i know chubbs hasnt even attempted a bite.. and from what other people on this forum have said i dont think theirs are aggressive either.. keeping wise.. unlike a leo they like a looser substrate to help hold humidity and so they can dig.. right now i have plain old potting soil.. not sure what other people here use though.. humidity should be kept around 60%.. i just mist my tank to help it stay up.
a little bit off topic but ive seen afts and leos housed together for short periods of time without problems.. the Petstore got sent two afts instead of two leos.. so for a few days they were kept together until they shifted the animals around to give them their own tank.. they apparently had no problems.. but it isnt recommended.. besides.. the blizzard they were in with is the laziest most laid back thing imaginable.. and is indifferent to everyone and everything except finding the perfect place to nap.

Thanks!

I wasn’t thinking of housing together just wondering on personality as my leo is very tame and gentle...
I just didn’t want to advise my friend to get one without checking temperment and care requirements...

Is there a way to tell if they are captive bred or not? I have heard rumours most are wild caught..
no breeders or anything here just a pet shop...

you cant really tell.. ive heard wild caught ones have the stripes.. but chubbs has a backstripe and is extremely mellow and most wild caught have a partially regrown tail.. which she also has.. but then for some reason it seems to be hard to find any aft without a regrown tail. depending on where youre getting it from try asking. i know some petstores work with breeders and will tell you who they get theirs from.. but yeah.. theyre very very mellow.. when we first got chubbs we had to try to get her to open her mouth to be handfed (she wasnt able to hunt very well at that point).. she absolutely refused to bite.. though after a while she did finally take some crickets.. but theyre sweeties.
sidenote.. they can run VERY fast.. so if its startled when its not used to you itll take off.. chubbs did.. we almost named her speedy because of it.

Thanks Smurfzilla

My store here won’t be able to tell me anything...lol They just get them in from suppliers...
Is there any hints on how to tell if they are healthy..just eyes or any tips...
Should I take the calmest....that sort of thing?

same basic health rules apply to them as leos.. like if one is really skinny and lethargic, or has really bad shed, eye issues.. etc.. you can sort of tell generally how healthy they are by looking at how their skin is.. chubbs was not healthy when we got her.. her colors were very dull and bland.. now theyve brightened up considerably and shes getting more subtle color variations.
i dont know how others are.. chubbs was very stressed so the way she acted in the store was not how she was when she got used to her new home.. but yeah.. if they have one thats easy to handle then probably get that one (unless you see one with colors and such that you really like).. from what i heard theyre easier to get used to people than leos. good luck finding one. ^_^

Thanks for all your help its really appreciated....Pet shops are hard to buy from here as there is no reptile specialists..

I may have to order it too....as they only get a few reptiles here...but thats the next step is finding breeders ect...
So thanks again

good luck!.. ordering may be your best bet.. we found chubbs by accident.. and most places that do carry them dont get the numbers that they get of leos.. its sad but if you find a good place to order from its probably going to be healthier than if you found one in a store.

A good rule of thumb is to look for a fat tail, clear and alert eyes and just a generally good looking lizard.
Sometimes you can tell a wild caught by a regrown tail or no tail at all, recently dropped. They must get stressed out so badly :(
Look a little down this forum for a post by FamilyZoo labeled "What to look for and avoid when buying an AFT". It is very informative!

i know quite a few places to get AFTs up here Hoppy ill send you the links in a PM. Try to stay away from AFTs that appear to be wild caught like AFT~413 said, check out that thread its full of good info. I would like to breed Fatty, im looking into getting him a Female Amel, i think he’d make some awesome looking babies.
