Why???
When I bought my first 2 hermit crabs (George and Callie) in August, George was in a shell that was a little too small. The day I brought him home, he changed shells and has been in the same one ever since (5 months). Callie was really close to being the same size as George (I got ones that were the same size so I didn’t have to worry about having a bunch of little and big shells in the tank). Well anyway...Callie sadly died three days ago, and I didn’t want George to be alone, So I went and bought Izzy yesterday. She is a lot smaller than George. I still had George’s shell that I bought him in, and I figured it was big enough for Izzy to fit comfortably in, since her shell is too small. I added Izzy to the tank and watched her and George say hello and interact...then I went to bed thinking that Izzy would have a new shell on in the morning. When I woke up this morning, George was in his tiny shell that he was wearing when I bought him! I thought it was small for him 5 months ago, but WOW, he’s grown A LOT! Izzy didn’t change shells... So, why did George change into his small shell that he was wearing when I bought him? I know it’s not comfortable...When he goes in as far as he can, his eyes are sticking out. It’s kind of sad...and that shell was for Izzy anyway lol. Here are some pictures...I don’t have one of George while he was wearing the shell that I bought him in. I was planning on taking a picture of him the next day, but he changed overnight. So, here is the shell that he moved into the first night I got him. This picture was taken about a month ago though...
This is the one he changed into last night (the shell I bought him in) Sorry it’s a terrible pic...I took it with a cell phone.
Isn’t that sad! Poor little guy!! That’s as far as he can go in. So, do any of you know why he went back to his old shell? I will probabaly go and get him 2 or 3 bigger shells tomorrow. THANKS IN ADVANCE!  |
