Hey, hope you know that those painted shells are toxic to your little crabbies! They could kill them. You should get rid of the extra painted shells and buy some natural ones, then once the hermies that are in the painted shell switch to a natural shell take the the painted one out.
BTW, what’s in the food dish?

EEK...no I didn’t know about the shells being toxic! Thank you for telling me! I had a bunch of Hermit Crabs about 15 years ago, and that’s all they sold were natural shells back then. Both of the pet stores I went to today to get shells didn’t have any unpainted ones. Where can I find them? In the food dish is a combination of Crab cakes, lobster bits and variety bites. Their other bowl has apples, raisins and some coconut. I feed the fruit out of a seashell, and have a cuttlebone in there (recommended by the guy at Petco).

Most pet stores should have natural shells, but if you can’t find any in the petstores, try Link!. I have bought shells from them before. Just make sure to get the right sizes!  You should have at least 3 extra shells per crab, but since yours are in painted shells I would get four, so if they switch they will still have 3 extras.
I would also recommend that you wean your crabbies off of the commerical diet. Some of the ingredients in those foods can be deadly. This is a web site with a list of safe and unsafe foods you can feed your hermit crabs. Second Link! Well, good luck with your hermit crabs! Do you think you could post a complete overhead view of your tank?

Thank you again. I got a bunch of natural shells in all different sizes (I have different sized crabbies). I took out all the empty painted shells. So far, they haven’t shown any interest, but as soon as I see that they’re making the switch, I’m getting the painted ones out of there! I had no idea they were toxic. The people at the pet shops here say that’s about all they sell, and that they are painted with non-toxic paint. I took them out anyway...better safe than sorry!

Try boiling the new empty shells in water for 5 minutes, just to make sure they are clean. Cool them off and then put them in the tank.

After I have boiled and cooled the next round of shells to go in (I have WAY too many to ever fit in the tank!) I put them into a big peanut butter jar with about a cup of their saltwater and shake it a bit, so that the shells are all damp with saltwater. They are drained and then go into the tank and I always have more shell changes than when I just put them in after cooling.

Ok...all but two made the switch to natural shells..those last two are being pretty stubborn...LOL I have plenty of empty (natural) ones in there, and just ordered a boatload of them from the site that someone linked in this thread :) Hopefully they will all be happy now!! well, also to the paint being toxic. the paint could chip off and the crabs could eat it (crabs aren’t always the smartest things) yeah, painted shells are very bad. most of my hermies were in painted shells when i bought them and i have only ever had one crab switch shells, and he was a nat into a nat. but i have all nat shells in there for them and am planning on getting more. (e-bay or local non-chain petstore) your hermies seem to have a good owner who didn’t know about one thing. good luck!

yea hey listen this is a trick that like me and one other person know about if you put a little salt water in the spare shells in the tank it tempts the hermies to change and it also like lathers it up and makes it easier for them to get in the shell it works all the time for my crabs and i breed themm i have too many pics to post if i wanted to post them all i think i have about 87 crabs i have anywhere from the size of dimes to baseballs they are all bin 100 -55 gallon tanks except for the ecodorian they are in a 2 gallon because they dont get very bigg but other wise your crabs look very healthy

Was the statement about the E’s in a 2gallon tank supposed to say a 20g tank? If not I’m not quite understanding why such active crabs would be in such a small tank.
And if you breed them, show some group pictures of the baby crabs. Which species are you breeding?
