well, first off they are not as easy as you would think. also whatever you remeber from class might not have been right.

-you need a minumin of a 10 gallon tank. and each crab needs about 2-3 gallons of space so you could have 4-5 (depending on size) in a 10 gallon with a lot of second level space.
--tanks should be longer not taller but always have lots of vines and greenery
-you need 2 water dishes one salt and one normal. the salt ca not be table salt!!! the water dishes need to be deep enough so that you crab and go completely under water in it.
-you need sand for the bottom, some people say to stay away from calcium sand so to be safe go with playsand from lowes. sand needs to be twice as deep are you biggest crab.
-most commercial foods are bad.
-painted shells are toxic to hermit crabs but you can buy them in them as long as when they move out you take the shell out.
