why do sooo many petstores put their hermit crabs on gravel?doesn’t it hurt the crabs?

Shellbabe, this is a family forum. Please keep vulgar language to yourself.

Petstores keep crabs on gravel because it is cheap, easy to clean [if they do clean it] and the crabs aren’t in their care for a long while anyway.

sorry. over excited i guess.

petstores know little to nothing in most cases about hermit crabs. they sell bad stuff for them and they set a bad example for the buyers. "but mommy! they have pretty gravel and that shell has spongbob on it!!!" i have only found one good set up kit for the crabs and it didn’t have enough sand, but a good starter all the same.


you’d still have to buy a 10 gallon tank, and that says up to 10 gal tank so that means "mommy" can get away with following the box and getting a critter keeper.

i have to agree with your thoughts on petstore, but try to put it a little nicer please. i look up info on this forum with my little girl. when we got our crabs about a year ago, the guy at the pet store had us buy one of those cricket keeper things and a whole bunch of crap, that cost way tooo much. then we had to turn around and spend another bunch of money to get the correct stuff. had the same problem when i got my first beardie too. i try to get all my stuff online now.

Pet stores are a business. If "mis’informed" people will buy something, a store will sell it. Just like the kritter keepers. There is such a lack of people pre-researching their pets that companies can still make money off the nature of cheap people to try fitting their pet into the smallest possible enviroment for their convenience. If more people would research prospective pets, merchandise like that wouldnt be sold. Its the consumers fault, not the business.

Animals in pet stores are usually given just the basics in their enclosures because they are on display for sale. Its very rare for animals to be in a store for more than a few months.
