yeah so i get on RZ just about everyday so i figure that if someone has questions they could ask here and i would get back to them quickly. dont really think that any of you want me to answer, just someone in general but hey, i’m on constantly so what the heck. yeah, so ask away. and you can ask about life questions to i guess. mine sucks but i do give decent advice to others...

is that reptile background stuff okay to have? i have it in the tank and my hermit crabs like it but my large one seems very active, especially in the day and pulls little chunks of the foam background off and then drops them.i was told it is non-toxic.is it safe to have?

Are you talking about something like this: Link
I don’t think that its a good thing that they may be eating it. (it droping to the ground)
But seeing how geckos and such are fine with it so should hermits.
I would just take it out and stick on some of this : Link : on the back wall for climbing.

Would my hermit be lonely because hercules is molting so he has noone to play with. Well i play with him for like 1-2 hours every night but i suppose it s not the same.
Im not going to the city soon so it would be a stuggle to get another hermit.

AL-
I think its fine. You like alone time don’t you? Well 2 weeks or so alone shouldn’t do too much harm to the crab. Its not like some people don’t buy just one crab... those poor souls live for a few months still.

Shell, I was wondering, can you get a E, or Ruggie, and then ship them to me? I really want a different type of crab.

Ummm, I really just don’t want them getting hurt during shipping. Somewhere around here there was a great link to a huge page telling how to ship crabs.

yes, i was talking about that background stuff. i found out why the big crab was doing that- the smaller one was underground for a few weeks so he had no one to play with and was going crazy but he stopped picking the background off when i took the smaller one out.

HEy ella well after the snow melt there was this huge random bag of soil in my back yard and it looks just like really small wood chipps. I don t see any small white ball thingys so would it be ok for my hermits? also i got a spider plant how well would that do in my hermits ank, i would like tank the dish it s in a bury it in the sand so you wouldn t see the base, just the plant? any ways let me know.

um, i think the plant would be fine like that. i never gave my crabs plants because they would torchure the poor thing, climbing all over it...

and about the soil... im not sure... i’d have to go with a no. possibly if you backed it and such but still, i wouldn’t risk it. go get yourself a nice 4 USD brick of Eco-Earth. that will fill a 20L up twice! And I’ve been told crabs like sand/EE mix, that’d fill a 20L 4 times! yeah its really cheap and the crabs like it. i am tempted to go over the street (to the north building of the high school where my crabs are living) sometimes and clean out the tank and make them a nice Sand/EE mix substrate to live on...

and on a personal note i fell :P and i have a freaking crazy bruise all over my ankel. at one point it swelled up to look like a softball... ouch... yeah so im limping or walking with an airboot x_x

Um, I dought you will find any exotics (Es are not really thst exotic) because they made shipping rules way more complex because people started using live animal shipping to smuggle drugs across boarders! I hate people that do drugs because they ruin so many things for other people! Es are usually found in mom and pop stores or at pet supplies plus. I got mine at pet supplies plus in the top tank.

its just that
i agree that Es and Ruggies arent very exotic but i knew what they meant...
and actually my petco has Es and Straws and sometimes Ruggies... and i guess you can call WildSide a mom and pop store... its basicly a non-chain pet store with relaxed atmosphere. no uniform thingers...

Ruggies are exotic and are now very rare, when was the last time you saw ruggies or straws? I hope they start to come back soon as I really want some ruggies and indos!

I had a ruggie... mutlipule but the others (like 2?) died...

yeah um molting really depends on the crab. i think it said somewhere that the small crabs molt quicker and more often and the bigger ones take longer and do it less often. i think thats what it said...

and for misting i just sparyed the entire tank all over about every 4 hours or everytime i saw them (which evers father apart usually) but really im not sure and i think it depends a lot on their habbitat (tank decor) and where you live

omg....

Plants need to be identified by species and cross referenced for toxicity levels before adding them to a crabitat. They will also need to be prepared to be put into the tank.

If the soil stuff is meant for gardening, keep it for gardening. Eco-Earth is only around five dollars per brick and is a safe substrate.

Small crabs can molt within weeks, large crabs can take upto three months to complete their molt.

BUY A HYGROMETER, THEY ARE CHEAP keep your humidity levels between 75 and 85%. Nuff Said.

If the background material isnt a natural material and is man made (ie the exo-terra styrofoam backgrounds) I wouldnt put it in a crabitat. Crabs are not geckos.

People forget too easily that there are many professionally made caresheets on the web. The webs for research, use it.

Here we go....

I already knew the plant that she was talking about was fine for crabs.

yup. i totally agree.

Quote:

Thats what the times were. yup yup :) i knew them i just was too lazy to go re-google it. its saved somewhere on my computer (not this one)

Quote:

That seemed to come out rudely in my mind but i not know if thats what you meant. yes hygrometers will kinda tell you if you need to spray more. i was answering her question, you were telling her some somewhat-random info on a tanget.

Quote:

Agreed. But isn’t Eco-Earth somewhat man made... You just can’t say to stay away from man made stuff....

Quote:

Yes, but isn’t this also part of the web? Couldn’t they get their info from here. I agree that they should try to look somewhere else first but really, this helps a lot.

And finally, what just kinda ticked me off...

Quote:

omg....

Really whats so ’omg’ about it. they got info you overall just repeated what i said. really, that was rude to me in my mind...

I do not claim to be this all-knowing one with years of experience. Im just a kid who had crabs for a year and knows about them, and gets a on computer everyday and usually that sometimes that computer blocks every good site i know leaving me with RZ unblocked... I can just give them a quick answer thats all I really claim to.
And I don’t me to be rude to Froggz or anyone else.

I don’t know, maybe its just because I am blasting my ears off with loud music in school and haven’t talked for about 10 hours, that Im taking things the wrong way...

Simply the way you put things could lead people to make their own conclusions and lose crabs. Very possible. Just like the fact if that plant has been fertilized at all the past two or so months it could very well be toxic to the crabs.

posting a quick question about a situation is one thing. Sharing pictures and experiences are another.

Having a properly researched and set up crabitat with proper guages shouldnt need misting often at all. My 55 is at a constant level of 88% on one end and 76% humidity on the other. I mist once a week to wash down the vines, branches and leaves.

Well, it may be different where they live it could be very dry so you would need to mist more. Or maybe your habitat has things that hold in moisture better... Theres a lot of factors to take in...

Your point? You can love something dearly with all of your heart, and still be ignorant on its actual care needs. Just like everyone that loves their betta, but has it in a bowl. And I’m actually not a troll. I’m just severely dissapointed in the degrade this particular forum has seen. There used to be alot of intellegent crab keepers and they’ve all left to other forums because of crap like this. Keep your future posts to yourself.

frog, you must really suck at your career, since I know plenty of people that give much better advice then you. You aren’t the only one that cares about your pets or can take care of them! I really am getting bugged by your replies even though they aren’t aimed at me. Expirence is needed but, people who are inexpirenced that are passing on info they learned from people with expirence is still good advice! Stop being so cocky! You REALLY need to know that, you catch more flies with honey then with vinegar! Every post I read that you wrote always either calls them an animal abuser or idiot. No one pays attention to what someone is telling them if they yell, they just try to defend themselves even if they are wrong, they wont even think about exactly what you said even if it was right or not. I know because I have been on both sides! Try being nice! Also animal lover, please no more flaming frog.

also if you attack me on this, you are really only proving me point
