 Afriad of large hermit crabs?

hey everybody,
I am going to get some hermit crabs.I’m not sure on the size yet but,I was wondering is there anyway for me to get rid of my fear of large hermit crabs?I mean I know they are not gonna hurt me but, they just kinda scare me for some reason. What is a good size to start out with?I read that larger crabs are easier to take care of and are hardier. Is this true?

i can’t fix your fear of large hermit crabs. why are you scared of them? just hold them with gloves a few times a week and then switch to your hands.
hermit crabs aren’t totally harmless.they can pinch you if you annoy them too much or out of curiosity they might taste you (my small one does it all the time).

smaller ones are often more active than larger ones, not to say larger ones aren’t active...

i would prefer 1 small, 1 medium, and 1 large hermits to start off with.
hermit crabs will stress out if they don’t have a "buddy" or colony of other hermit crabs near, and will eventually die.

i’ve never heard of larger crabs being hardier and more easy to take care of.
maybe smaller ones are a tiny bit more delecate but are just as good as eaters as large ones.

i have one small/medium hermit and a jumbo together and they are both fine.

 Afriad of large hermit crabs?

Hey,
thanks :).Yah they said more delicate but,how delicate?I’m not sure they just always look like they want to hurt me.It kinda just freaks me out when they come out of there shells for some reason.Yah I know they can pinch what I meant by not hurting me like I guess they can’t do much harm is what I should have said. Are they alot more active than larger ones?Ok thanks I will try that with the sizes.Just a question do crabs care what size they are around or do they like being around the same size as they are?Ok I had hermit crabs before but,I was younger.I didn’t really know what I was doing.I had three of them. Two were in a tank together and then I bought another one cuz the other one got killed(by accident very sad I dropped a water bottle on it didn’t mean to made me so sad).then I got another little guy and I put him in the new tank(didn’t know that you had to introduce them and let the new one destress)and then I took him out cuz the other guys kicked him out of the hiding hut and he just looked scared. After that I would hold him alot and such and he was very happy. The other reason he died was because he surface molted and didn’t make it.My question is why was he so active and happy being alone?Sorry my story was so long. Thanks for the info.

they’re not really that delecate, but let’s say you accidentally drop a heavyish book on the small/medium one and the large one. the large one would have a better chance that it wouldn’t get hurt than the smaller one/s.

i think hermit crabs do care about their sizes a little. they would prefer to be with their own size(because sometimes if the larger one is starving enough, it will go cannibalistic, at least from what i’ve seen a few times in saltwater hermits), but they’re overall fine with being with different sizes.

sorry about the loss from a water bottle.

what do you mean by this?

i don’t think the hermit would want the other one out! it might have just been curious.

you can’t really tell if a hermit is happy or not (unless you have a hermit crab whisperer, which i don’t think are really that common).

it was actually probably stressed out from not being around other hermits.they just don’t show it.

i would start with a couple small/mediums. the large and jumbos can sometimes have problems with molting and need a lot more space. you can comfotably fit two small/medium crabs in a 10 gal tank. as they molt they will grow and eventually be a jumbo. that might be easier for you if you are nervous about handling large crabs because they grow slowly.
