You can keep 5 hermit crabs in a 10 gallon tank with coconut husks for substrate and you should feed it/them fruit and commercially bought Food And a shallow water bowl

1) No you can keep different sizes together.
2) I have a 20 gallon. The 10 gallon tank I had was way to small.
3) The best type of crab for a beginner is Purple Pincher’s, very hardy.

Also I wanted to make note, if you have 5 SMALL Hermie’s yes they could fit in a 10g for a while, but 5 JUMBO or LARGE would not fit in a 10g.

Your definitly right about the sizes Em. Also Toadmaster, you forgot the fact that all hermit crabs need saltwater. Your dishes of both salt and freshwater need to be large enough to allow your hermit crab to get in and refill its shell and bathe itself. Allowing your crabs to self bathe can greatly reduce the stress and lower the deathrate of hermit crabs.
