Good first hot snake? Definately...if you want to even consider a hognose a hot. (they technically are, but nothing even remotely dangerous)

Good first hot snake? I agree with Monty. They will def. not prepare you for anything stronger. I just mean that they can be a good first "classified" hot if you want one, if you know what I mean. I’d say for the most part, hognoses (at least the western) are pretty calm. (much opposite from most venomous) I have two hogs. The one is super calm and the other one will hiss whenever he sees me, but I reach in and take him out and then he’s like, "Ok, whatever, it’s cool now"

Good first hot snake? If you are asking about a first hot snake then I would suggest something fast like a racer or if you want to get really crazy get a couple different water snakes and if you can handle them two to three times a week without getting bit for a year you are ready for a hot. If not, well you just cost yourself thousands of dollars, time in the hospital, and a possibility of death. You will get bit. There is no question about it so since you are going to get a hot no matter what anyone says on here, at least call your local hospitals and let them know ahead of time what you will have so that they will have the antivenins available and enough to save your life if you make it there on time. Go with a copperhead for your first hot. They more than likely wont kill you and they are not very aggressive. If you go for a cobra or gaboon type hot than I have no advice for you other than good luck. Hope this helps.

Good first hot snake? I agree with cobra - if you want to practice for handling a hot then go out side and find a racer or water snake and try to catch him without being bitten, just be sure to wear old clothes because the poo will fly!! You will see what speed and quick strikes are all about...hehehe.
Using a hog to get experience for handling hots is like using a box turtle to get experience handling snappers. I see where you are coming from but a much faster and nastier nonvenomous snake will serve the purpose much better.

Good first hot snake? Don’t laugh. Some localities (uneduacted and ignorant) are banning the ownership of them because of this.

Good first hot snake? I wouldn’t really call them hot. More like ’warm’. :)

Good first hot snake? I’m totally clueless to the venom of hognoses cause i’ve held multiple ones in my life and i’ve heard them refered to as warm before but the owners of the stores where i’ve held the snakes have never metioned them possesing any venom. Are the rear fanged with a really weak venom? And what happens when they do bite?

Good first hot snake? A lot of pain and swelling. It can take a couple of days for your hand to go back to normal if you’re stupid/ curious enough to let them keep chewing on you. Every case of it I’ve ever heard of was a feeding accident though. I’ve tried tong-feeding f/t mice to mine a couple of times, and seeing food that moved absolutely TERRIFIED her, so I think my fingers are safe. Which is good, because as enthusuastically as they eat, if you take a feeding bite I’d say you are definitely going to get chewed a few times before you detach them.
