Are hognoses good pets
I currently have five snakes and i have always liked hognose snakes. Are they a good pet for someone like me, i know their slightly poisonous, rear fanged snakes. Are they biters??? I have been bitten by my snakes twice before so i am not afraid of snakes that bite, and i know being rear fanged they would really have to bite you to invenomate a person. Tell me your opinions they are greatly appreciated!!!1
thanks

Are hognoses good pets Western Hognoses are more succesful as pets compared to Easterns. This is because an Easterns diet consists of amphibians and not rodents like a Western Hognoses diet does. If your thinking about getting one find a captive bread Western Hognose that is consistantly feeding on rodents. Some snakes can be problem eaters which will go off feeding for a long time but there is no side effect with the snake. They just sometimes choose not to eat for a long period of time. That is why it is important to know how the snake is feeding before you buy it. They do make for a good pet snake though. Some snakes are defensive about being held and some are not. My baby female does not mind being held and never hisses or strikes. Human contact helps with the snake to feel more comfortable about being held. Hognoses are not known for biting alot. They are more known for puffing up and hissing and doing closed mouth strikes or rolling over and playing dead. One example of a way a Hognose might bite is if you have the scent of food on your hand and the snake smells it and mistakes your finger for food.

yeah i think it would be better for me just to look and read about them not have one as a pet. I have one attitudy snake right now and i don’t need another lol. Although they do still interest me, they are a very unique species. thanks for the info!!!

Are hognoses good pets You’re welcome. It just depends on the individual snake if it has a bad attitude or not. I would say the majority of captive bread Hognose’s are fine with being handled because they have had human contact since birth.

Are hognoses good pets I have read the response and just thought I would add my two cents. I have a wonderfully handsome little ladies man in Irwin. I had some feeding issues for several months where I tried different ways to get him to eat and he wouldn’t. If you have that prob, go for chicken broth first and save yourself the trouble. During this time he had some anger issues, understandable as they were still a little unnerving for a snake with the potential to give you a very bad day should you have a reaction to his "venom". In any case every time he puffed and puffed and struck out at me or the slender stick i used to try and track his location he NEVER once actually puffed up and struck AT me or the stick. Every time was several inches to either side of where I or my little stick very clearly was. When I used my bare fingers he would strike (closed mouth) but not get ANYwhere near me. When I would ignore it and pick him up, he simply goes into my hand and completely loses his fear and defensiveness. Perhaps I am just lucky to have all 4 of my kids be very docile and non aggressive. It is my opinion that if you can overcome the initial fear of a w. hognose "display" you will find them to be a FANTASTIC pet. I’ve never have even had a lid on his habitat, although now he is gaining in size I will soon change that. a WONDERFUL pet to have, just let ’em know you are not going to harm them by being gentle when you do pick ’em up and they will very very shortly lose the "display". In my experience anyway. Good luck!

Are hognoses good pets just thought I’d add from my experience
my hognose is way at the top of my favourite pet list
he’s the only snake I have who seems to enjoy curling up in my hand and staying there for ever
he’s the first snake I’ll give to child or person who’s scared or nervous of snakes
he’s easier to handle than the kings or garters and that’s saying a lot - mine are all pretty mellow

Are hognoses good pets Georgestrait66, when you say you used chicken broth to get your snake feeding did you mean you scented a pinkie with it? My snake is going through a not eating phase right now but she still remains active. I try and offer her a fuzzy every day but even after braining one warming them up a little and giving her time to smell them she acknowledges they are there but does not show interest in them as food. She is 3 months old.

Are hognoses good pets Thank you for the response. Tomorrow I am going to try the small container technique. Hopefully it works. I recently was reading a thread on the corn forum and I remember someone saying that is how they get their hatchlings to eat. Yes I recently got a three month old female Western from someone on this forum who was moving in the winter so they had to sell their snakes. I have only posted pics on here once I used a website called allyoucanupload.webshots.com it allows you to upload pics then you copy/paste the link that allows you to post the full size picture on forums. Thanks again.

 thanks for all your input!!
I am interested mostly because i can access them easily, i go to the northern burks reptile show often and they always have them there, they are also sooo beautiful!! I did handle one there and i was really close to buying it but i didn’t have all the info i wanted before i made that commitment. I am also going to college soon so i wasn’t sure how my parents would feel looking after a snake like that while i am away lol. My mom wasn’t to fond of the fact that they r venomous!! so i will probably wait until i move out before i get a hognose snake,
thanks again!!!!!

Are hognoses good pets Lol my mom wasn’t too happy of the idea of getting a venomous snake (no matter how mild it is) and she said no but then after a while she agreed and we went and got it. She likes to see Amba now. I think that you would love having a hognose snake, because they feed so easily and are such fun snakes to own.

 Yeah lol,
my mom is not really happy that she will have to take care of the snakes i already have while i am at college, but she secretly loves them lol! i did tell her their venom was soooo mild to humans but maybe its just the tought of it she doesn’t like. Oh well i might just get one any way, compared to my cali king it would have to be an angel, can’t get much worse lol!! They are fascinating snakes!!
thanks

Are hognoses good pets Haha and another possibility is to get an apartment and some room mates to split the cost of it or something, and then you can take all the snakes with you. I think that would be expensive, but you’d get to see them every day. ;P
