It should still be something with a clear top so you can have a fluorescent light. Mine’s very regular in her activity pattern and always comes out and hangs around aboveground for a few hours immediately after "sunrise," goes up and down all day after that, hangs out on top a little bit in the evening, and then buries herself again all night. But, yeah, plastic with a heat mat’s fine. Humans think that a plastic cage is somehow inferior to a glass one because it’s cheaper, but the snake couldn’t care less, and very few people use or feel they need heat lamps or CHEs for hoggies. This is assuming a room temperature in the 70s, obviously. If the whole room is too cold for snakes anyway then a heat mat alone isn’t going to change the air temperature.

It needs to be equivalent to a 10 gallon though. You can’t sacrifice the care of your animals just so you can have more.

That’s one of the things I like about tubs. It’s so cheap and easy to get good floor space with them. If I were a small nonclimbing snake I’d rather live in a 20X16 plastic container than a 20X10 ten gallon tank any day. The only thing about them that I’m not such a big fan of is that it’s a lot harder for me to judge how secure a floppy plastic lid is than with a sturdy, formfitting tank cover.
