 Tommorow!!!!

When I got mine, I handled her the day I got her, then left her alone for five days, and she happily ate as soon as I had her halfway into the feeding cup. They can always say no, but odds are they won’t. Unless they’re stressed or cold, a captive-bred western hognose is not an animal that’s known for lack of appetite.
Did you already pump the breeder’s brain for info on what the snake’s used to. Or can you get in contact by email? it’s good to find out early, while the info is fresh, whether the snake is used to live or dead, eating in-cage or out-of-cage, how often its used to, even what kind of substrate its used to. Not that you’ll necessarily even have any problems, but it’s good to know what kinds of changes you can make as a backupo plan, just in case "take snake home, wait, then feed snake," fails for whatever reason.

 Tommorow!!!!

ok thanx,
yeah i handeled him the day i got him too because even though i ha a heating pad and a light on him he was still getting really cold. But hes much better now lol, i did ask the breeder a few questions, he said he ate frozen thawed once a week and i would need the smallest pinkies i could find. so i am going to give it a shot tonight actually (going on to the beach this weekend lol) so hopefully he’ll eat okay
thanx again!!

What’s his cage setup like? If he was tame and healthy to start out with, and you left him alone while he was settling in, the most likely problem is environmental. Too little daylight can put them into winter mode, for example. Or his warm spot might be too cool, or his cool spot might be too cool. Or his warm spot might even be too warm, sometimes it’s too much of a good thing and they end up spending too much time in the cool area rather than frying themselves. I get good results with 14 hours of light, a much bigger tank than necessary, gentle undertank heat, and burrowable substrate so she has three dimensions to select temperature in.
Were you feeding him the same thing (aka live versus f/t) that the breeder was? Under the same conditions? Also, what time of day was the food offered?

 Tommorow!!!!

thanx for replying,
he is in a ten gallon and is tame and to my knowladge very healthy. As for day light i turn it on at like 6:30 am and turn it off at like 10 pm. is that too much day light?? As for temps his warm side is at like 79 degrees ferenhite. he is usually on the warm side but he is active and loves to climb up on this little plant i have in the corner of his tank. i didn’t think to ask about wht time of day he was fed at :! but i know that he has been on frozen thawed while the breeder had him. so thats wht i have been trying to feed him with but with no luck. :(
thanx

 Tommorow!!!!

79 might be too low for the warm side. That’s about the coolest that Bebe is ever comfortable for long. I know, it doesn’t really make sense to me either, since they live all the way up into southern Canada, but they like it warm. That’s probably what he’s looking for climbing around in the cage so much. Maybe the WC ones from the northern part of their range are different, idunno, but even though a big chunk of the captive gene pool came from fairly far north ever since then they’ve been bred for survival in warm snake rooms, as opposed to outdoors in North Dakota or wherever.
Lack of light isn’t the problem certainly, just up the warmth a little bit. The breeder I got mine from estimates from watching their activity cycle that given a choice they rarely let their body temperature drop below 82 degrees. And that if they do get too hot they’ll tell you pretty quickly by sitting in their water dish all day. With mine, I’ve found him to be correct on both counts.
Sorry for the slow reply there. The bank screwed up my paycheck deposit, the phone payment bounced, and I lost internet access for a few days until I could straighten things out.

well i have been keeping an eye on the warm side and it has been more like 83-86, i must have got 79 from right when i turned on his light or something. i did try to feed him on wed however he still did not eat, im not really sure what to do now. i even put the pinkie in there al night but it wasn’t touched. i have a rubber boa who hasn’t eaten for 2 and half months and i am going to get him a live hopper so while im there im probably going to see if he will take a better likeing to a live pinkie. i guess its worth a try,
thanx

 Tommorow!!!!

Leaving a pinkie overnight won’t do anything except starve the pinkie. Hognoses are diurnal. Especially if the cage is cooling down noticeably at night. Which, I haven’t had good results with. When I first got mine, all the websites were suggesting nighttime cooldowns, but she didn’t thrive until I accepted that she liked having heat around the clock. I do not pretend to understand how a snake with their geographic range could have so much need for around-the-clock heat, but that’s what I’ve had good results with.

Okay, it sounded like the heat lamp was your only heat source. Yes, of course the light should go off at night anyway.
I’ll be honest here. braining is overrated. There’s no harm in trying it, and soem snakes love it, buyt I’ve found many that couldn’t care less. And it’s only useful if the snake is amibivalent about eating. Kind of wants to, kind of doesn’t, and is one of the individual that really like the smell. If they just flat-out don’t want to eat though, it doesn’t run them around. Since you’ve alrady tried braining, I’m not saying there’s any harm in continuing to try it, but I doubnt it will prove to be the answer. You might also want to try some oddball scenting techniques. Tuna water, campbells chicken soup, or even artificial food scenters like Mouse Maker or Lizard maker, both made by T-Rex I believe. I keep hearing that Mouse Maker was discontinued, but I keep seeing it at reptile shows so somebody’s got to be selling it online.
About the leaving the pinkie overnight thing: you would do better to put it in there in the morning and leave it during the day when the snake is active. Or, one more idea: Put the snake and mouse in a deli cup, take the deli cup into the laundry room, and set in on top of a running clothes dryer. Cover it with something to minimize visual distractions, and often for some reason the vibrations will stimulate a feeding response. Never tried it personally, but I’ve known snakes that it’s worked for.
