He’s a CBB Hatchling High Red Southern Hognose Snake. He feeds consistently on small unscented pinkies. Currently, there are only two other people that I know of anywhere that have this color phase. He is quite a little beauty...
Tell me what you think! ...and no, he doesn’t have a name yet...if anyone has any suggestions! :-) ~Alex |

I think he should have some kind of a hog-based name. Prosciutto, maybe, or perhaps Bratwurst... |

JackAsp’s I think are very creative and humorous! :-) I really appreciate all the kind comments from all everyone else as well! I’m happy to hear that the some of the other members of the hognose community are impressed with this little guy. (I had to look far and wide before finally tracking this amazing snake down.) BTW Volt, I really appreciate the comments, and I think you should go for one yourself it you are interested!...maybe not one so expensive though :-) (Just remember to do your homework first! lol) They are just so cool, and they make an awesome addition to any collection...no matter what other stuff you have. Dane_Zoo, this color morph usually goes by the name "High Red" or "Red Phase". Occasionally people will color them "High Orange" or "Orange Phase"...but these are truly red (and I, nor the breeder who I bought from, call them "orange"). Also, they get a deep red wash over their body, and the red on their back gets more rich as they get older. They are only only hogs that I have EVER seen that get nicer as they age! It is quite remarkable, in my opinion. And again, keep in mind that there is only one breeder at this present time of this morph, and as of right now...the breeder, myself, and one other guy are the only ones (that the breeder knows of) that have this color morph. There are plenty of other Southerns that show high amounts of deep orange, but it fades as they age... They are very rare, and currently, only two are known to exist that were wild caught. There have been others that have been caught in the past, but I believe that none of them are still alive. So, the morph does occur in the wild (I don’t know if it is recessive or co-dominant), but it is extremely rare. The only other morphs I know of that have ever occurred in Southerns are Hypomelanistic (which I believe has currently only been produced one time and it was in captivity) and albino (which I believe occurred also one time with a wild caught female that died before she ever got the chance to breed). I don’t know what the current story is with the one hypo, or if there are now more. Well, I’m sure that was more information than you wanted...but I hope that it answered all the questions you had about the morph. ~Alex |

Oops... I meant "call them". Obviously, no one colors them! lol |

Southerns are not found as far north as easterns. Southerns typically have a more varied diet (they will eat amphibians, rodents, as well as other small mammals). Easterns feed strictly on toads and sometimes frogs, and will not live long even under ideal circumstances when fed rodents in captivity. (They cannot process rodents for whatever reason, and can not live solely off of them). Southerns are more closely related to westerns, and that may be why they do well on a rodent diet. Southerns also have more "potent" venom, if you want to call it that. All I mean is that their venom has been shown to paralyze very small mammals, very, very small birds, and amphibians. Eastern venom only has the ability to paralyze amphibians. (To my knowledge, neither of their venoms as the ability to kill any of their prey.) Southerns are also far less variable than easterns in their color. Southerns are the smallest North American hognose, and easterns are the largest. Lastly, for the most part, southerns are more rare than easterns...both in the pet trade and in the wild. Hope that info was sufficient. There is obviously much more you can learn though with a little research. (Those were just a couple of facts I knew off the top of my head from my own research.) ~Alex |
