These first few are of him before, during, and after meal time.
Him admiring his reflection (lol).
Some of him climbing (I didn’t think hogs climbed at all until this).
A pic of him on the scale, followed by a pic I really like of him poking his head out of the Sani-Chips (with a couple still on his head (lol)).
Some of the better close-ups I got.
I love this last one...
And finally...a body shot, followed by a pic of his house.
Hope you enjoyed them all...let me know what you think! ~Alex |

As far as visual differences between southerns and easterns...southerns have a more up turned snout, are very small, and as far as color goes...they do not come in many different color varieties (like eastern hogs do). Southerns typically have a gray ground color with black spots on their sides. The dorsal pattern is black saddles divided by light peach (normally) or sometimes their is very little color between the saddles (varies with locality).........or in VERY RARE cases there will be a deep redish orange between the saddles (like mine). The ventral pattern is typically gray with scattered black. Also, the tip of the tail typically changes to light brown and cream colored banding. Easterns vary tremendously with color (and sometimes pattern), but I agree...can have similar pattern and color to southerns. In my opinion, easterns have a less saddle-like dorsal pattern. (I’m not sure if that helps.) You really just have to study lots of pictures of the two to be able to tell them apart easily. And like I said, there are definitely some that are very hard to distinguish in a single photo. (I can tell you for sure though...you will never seen an eastern with as red only on its back contrasting with gray and black (like the red southern that I have). Anyway, I hope that some of that was helpful. :-) Dave1162...I don’t mind discussing the price because he was worth every penny. I payed $350 plus shipping for him after he was well started on unscented f/t small pinkies. Females were selling for $425, but females were only being offered as part of a pair. The reason for the high price is because of their extreme rarity. The breeder that sold me mine was still the only one in the world to be breeding red southerns as of the end of this season. Besides him and his friend, I was the third person to have one at the time. (Now I think there are about 2 or 3 more people that have one.) In the past, facilities like zoos have bought hatchling red southerns for four-figure amounts. For someone who likes hogs (like me lol), they are a rare opportunity to have a beautiful snake that almost nobody else has. |

All the pics besides the close-ups were taken with a Nikon E8700 (when I bought it from a friend used a few years ago, I think I payed like $600). The close-ups were taken with a Canon Power Shot A530 (I think I payed like $200 a few years ago for it. BTW I enhanced all of the close-ups and zoomed in on them using Adobe Photoshop. OK, so as far as picking a "really good camera to invest in", I just bought I new that I have done a lot of research on. I wanted a DSLR...so I went with the Canon EOS Rebel XTi. I feel it is the best starter DSLR for the most affordable price, and a really good camera in general to invest in. I bought it in a big kit from an Ebay business for $1300, but you certainly don’t need to spend that much. You can be the body and the kit lens (18-15mm) for just under $600 from some online sellers, but if you want to get good photos of your animals I would recommend shelling out about another $100-$200 to get a good quality lens with a macro mode (or get an actual macro lens). (The kit that I bought came with a macro attachment lens, as well as a Tamron 70-300mm lens that as a macro mode...so I am set on that.) I haven’t had the chance to photograph any of my snakes with it yet, but I know it was definitely a good investment. I hope I was some help. ~Alex |
