 Hognose Questions

I’ve been wanting a Hognose for a while now, and have done as much reseach as I think I can via books and websites. I know, however, nothing can compare to the information given by people who KNOW and love their hognose.

Any advise, tips, or even stories on your hognose is welcome.

I’ll be getting a western, by the way. I’m sure I want a male.

 Hognose Questions

I have a baby western hognose, and I’ve dealt with adults before. They are great snakes! Generally wonderful temperaments, very cool, and really cute! I never really wanted anything besides my boas until I held a hognose for the first time, now I really like them. The cool thing about hognoses is that they stay small. You can keep them in a 20 gallon glass tank comfortably, even when they’re adults. Sometimes they do get a little hissy when you reach in the enclosure, but it’s all a bluff most of the time. Once you pick them up, they stop. My little guy is very friendly though, he’s actually with me right now, slithering about on my keyboard (and making very hard to type). Are there any specific questions you have about them? I’m more than happy to answer! in the meantime, here’s some pics of him:

 Hognose Questions yup.

You really don’t want to give a hognose live mice. They can’t kill as fast as a constrictor, which wouldn’t matter with a toad, but can get them very torn up if they’re eating a mouse. So if you have one that’s fixated on live food, you’ve got to feed it babies for it’s whole life, which are fattier than weaned ones. The Madagascan ones are smarter, faster, and constrict their prey, so it’s not quite as bad, but the American ones really aren’t meant to tangle with rodent teeth.

Well, I feed my snakes live mice, but what I do is I knock the mice out before feeding it to my snake, because I’ve had instances where the stupid rodent tried to take a chunk out of my python.
You say hogs eat slower?
If I had a hog, I’d probably end up just knocking out the mouse harder, so it wouldn’t wake up. Not anytime soon, anyways.

 Hognose Questions

I think the word you’re looking for is "Venomous"...not "Poisonous"?!

There’s only one known "Poisonous" snake in the world and it’s from Asia I believe.

And "No"...Technically a Hognose Snake is not venomous. They do have a mild toxin in their saliva and the only way it would harm you would be if the Hognose Snake bit you, latched-on and chewed for a little while and you happen to be allergic (like being allergic to bees). Otherwise it would most likely just cause local swelling and irritation to the bite and surrounding area.

I have been bit by many Hognose Snakes at BHB Reptiles (I put out some You Tube videos of our visits) and have never had a reaction at all. But that’s "me"! Someone else may react differently!

Here is a link to one online caresheet that is accurate: Link
