 W. Hognose for first

I’ve been researching a few different snake options for a first time snake. The most commons ones I’ve seen are pythons (mostly ball), kingsnakes (which my brother has an albino), and hognose snakes.

I was thinking of maybe getting a red tail boa, but I decided that it would be too big for a first time snake (I’m sure there are a lot of you out there wiping the sweat off your foreheads thinking "Thank God someone realised it!" LoL).

Now, I know you all are going to warn me that they are slightly venomous, but I read that their bites about as poisonous as a beesting (and not to worry, there’s a really long story about a golf cart, a curvey gravel road, a crash, a tree, and about 20 bee stings that has me convinced that I am not allergic to bee stings) but I’m not too worried about that.

Now, I’m just a little interested in the price and set up of these little buggers. The 24th I’m heading to a reptile show in Indy, so I hope to find some at a good price, but I haven’t a clue what a "Good price" is.

I know I need to have a 10 gallon, but will it eventually need a 20? And a heating pad/ceramic bulb (well that’s what we use with our beardies so I figure it would work for the hoggies, too) along with some aspen- which brings me to another question: How often does the apsen bedding need to be changed.. I figured ever 2-3 days. Is that correct? And how often do they need fed? Anyhow, what else would I need for my set up? Do they require any UVB or water bowls?

I think that’s it for now. Thanks for your comments!

Oh another question.. There are different types of W. Hognoses, I believe. Which is the best kind to get (yes, I know it matters on the person, and the snake, but which are the most docil and such)?

Congratulations on your choice! Western hogs are great first snakes.

My personal opinions (laced with a few facts):

1. I have never been bitten by a Western hog. They are unlikely to strike in defense - just make sure you feed them very carefully. We keep plastic tubs that we drop the snake - and then the mouse - into, so the snake doesn’t associate your hand with his lunch.
2. Price has been steadly increasing. You can find babies for about $50-75 apiece, but I recommend a first-timer should get an adult female, an ’03 or ’04 (females generally have a better appetite) and for this you may pay about $100-125. Be sure to ask when and what it last ate. Try to get one that’s feeding on frozen/thawed mice. We feed ours about once a week.
3. They can stay in a 10 or a 20, if you want to plan ahead, get a 20, but you may not need it for a very long time. We use undertank heaters and aspen - and we spot clean the aspen, changing it out about once a month.
4 . No UVB is required, but we like to put a water dish in their tanks - you’d be surprised at how often they drink!

Good luck, and feel free to ask any other questions you may have...

I read that you shouldn’t handle a snake 72 hours after it eats. Well.. how do you put it back in the cage?
Thanks for your reply!

Two options, feed in tank or put it back in tank from feed box when it finishes, replacing the snake isn’t really "handleing" they mean prolonged contact mostly.

He said it

We have never had a problem with regurgitation...just make sure you wash your hands and/or be smooth and speedy about the transfer back to its cage.

Okay. I’ve read some posts about snake hooks. Are the necessary for a snake of this size?

Aw don’t laugh. You make me feel like I should have known that =(.
Better safe than.. say.. prodding the poor snake with a snake hook.

Oh another question-
I’m not interested in getting one at the moment, but do you guys know how much Red Albinos would run?
http://www.hognose.co.uk/RED%20ALBINO.htm

Pamela- Is yours a "Speckled"? If so, that’s the type I’m interested in obtaining. If its not, could you tell me what type it is? Thanks!

No I’m not laughing at you, I’m just trying to picture getting a hook under my hognose as he looks at me like I’m on crack... "mang what the heck, you grow me up to use for fishing bait...oh it’s on HISSSSSSSSS" Idk about morphs and color variants/phases, I caught mine wild so I honestly have no idea what they are running.

Lol. Ok no hooks of any kind.
I read that they were still really docil in nature too. Is that true? Does he/she roll over when he/she’s scared? I read that the captive born ones only do that really when they’re babies.

I have never ever found a western that rolled over, upset wild ones hood, false strike, poo, musk, rattle, hiss, and generaly put on a show. Never had one bite ever. This one will hood and hiss occasionaly, and still poos every once in a while, but not often, has never struck, and is extremely docile. I would suggest the westerns as they seem easy to keep on f/t rodents.

Yeah, that’s what I’m going with. I read many times they weren’t as picky eaters as the Eastern.

This is one of mine that was in shed, when NOT in shed, she is just the sweetest thing, but on this particular day, she just lost it! She is captive bred:

i would get yourself a pencil and poke it at the snake - this will tell you what kind of mood it is in...if it strikes (and all of ours strike closed-mouthed) then you know what kind of reaction you will get. We pick them up as if they are toy plastic snakes. There is no reason to fear a hognose. We have even opened their mouths before to perform certain procedures (pinkie pump, etc)

How many Hognoses do you have? Would you mind showing pictures of them (ok, now I sound like one of those annoying 12 year olds who post threads saying "show me your biggest snake and I’ll tell you who wins")). Oh, and names too, if you don’t mind.
Also, pinkie pump? What is that? Also, do they "yawn" like boas and stuff do? I’m assuming thats an all snake kinda deal, but just asking to be on the safe side.

If you are a first time snake owner, please do yourself a favor and get a captive born ball python.

I haven’t owned a snake in 30 years (owned many up to that point, including two red-tails), until my recent acquisition of a yearling ball python for my 6-year-old. What an awesome pet! A real beautiful, docile sweetie. We are thrilled. In the 3-weeks we’ve had him, he’s eaten twice and shed once. About 2-feet long..

Really, if you’re a first time snake owner do yourself a favor and take my advice.

I got an.. upsized version, lol. A Malagasy Blonde Hognose. They get a a few feet bigger than W. Hognoses. I’d still like to get a Western down the road, but right now I have my hands full with the zoo we have.

North American hognoses are immune to Bufotoxin. At least mine are
