My Regal Horned Lizard isn’t eating.

I’ve had a Regal Horned Lizard for nearly a week now. He’s a pretty good size. I believe he’s nearly six inches long. He’s got yellow scales around his thighs and lower abdomin, so I think he’s a male. I’ve named him Malk.

He’s not very shy. He climbs on my hands and just sits there. Is that strange? I placed him on a shelf a few times, and he basks in the sun.

I’ve got all of the equiptment that’s been recomended. I’ve got a goot heat lamp and a powerful UVB light. He’s in a thirty gallon terrarium.

The only problem is that I don’t see him eating. I give him several small crickets a day. When they’ve been in there for awhile, I put them back in their carrier. I’ve never seen him eat. Even when I leave him, I still see the same old crickets. How often do these guys eat? I can’t find any information on it. When should I feed him? Should I switch to ants since theyr’e a main food source of his?

I understand why he’s drinking so little, but I don’t understand why he’s not eating.

He needs ants for sure. Are you in an area that has his native harvester ants? Solare are somewhat particular about them. check out www.phrynosoma.org for more.
You can email me if you have more questions are cable_hogue@ phrynosoma.com
take out the space there in the email.

I live in Arizona and Regal Horned Lizards are natives. It woud make since for Harvestor Ants to be native.

I got Malk from the desert last Friday, so he’s wild caught. Could this be what also is keeping him from eating? Also, won’t he get hungry enough soon and eat the crickets?

Are ants difficult to keep? If he needs them, I’m willing to purchase. Alos, how much are these ants?

He might be a little shy about eating when you first catch him, but he should start if you give him good ants. They don’t like to be handled a lot so that might be stressing him too.
If you order ants, just pop them in the refrigerator. They’ll keep about a week.
How’s he doing lately?

I’m not handling him a lot. I know that these guys aren’t really in to being petted and such.

I’ve got two other horny toads. I’ve had them for nearly a year now. They’re in seperate twenty gallon aquariums. They love crickets and mealworms and they were wild caught.

Malk’s not doing too well. I think I may have to drive out to the desert and release him. He hasn’t been drinking either. I know horned lizards don’t drink much, but he’s not driking at all.

I put a background around his cage accespt for some parts in the front, so he doesn’t try to escape. He usually just burrows into his sand or basks under his lights.

I don’t think he’s got parasites or any thing.

I went to PetCo today to ask for help and the lady explained to me that these guys are bad pets and how he probably won’t survive.

I feel really bad. I shouldn’t have taken him. If he dies, it’ll be even worse.

I’ve ordered some ants. They should be here in two days. I don’t know if I can wait that long though.

I’m afriad he’s going to die. It’ll be all of my fault to. :( That’s what I get though for playin’ with wild animals.

Wild caughts are very fragile and many times will do this...refuse to eat and such due to stress factors. Read the caresheet post I have below a few threads. I’ll be posting a better update soon.
Letting it go in the meantime until you read more is a better way to ensure it survives, but if you let it go, keep in mind that it will have to go sooner rather than later, as it’s about hibernation time for these guys out there...and getting colder.

The problem is that horned lizards dont eat crickets. They eat ants. I think it is possible to order them online.

Horned Lizards will eat crickets. They eat a high proportion of ants in the wild, but even a solare will eat crickets. Crickets are just not a good common food for them.

The problem is when they are wild caught ( like this case ) they tend to be stressed after capture and will not eat anything.

WHAT!? That’s rediculous. Horned Lizards are DIURNAL. I hope you don’t own one.
Please don’t give advice on reptile forums if you don’t know what you are talking about. Somebody’s animal may suffer the consequences.

Since it is wild caught i think you should find an ant hill and either take ur lizard to it or bring the ants back to you.
