 Deep Consideration

Hi to all, my name’s skott, i’m new to the forum but not to reptiles. I’m considering a DHL or other HL but my only concern is i live in pennsylvania. We have ants, just not the right kind. I’d love to befriend a HL but not if i can’t provide for it. Is this a strict thing with HLs? Do they have to have ants and only ants? Could one live happily on crickets and mealworms and such or no? Is it possible to have the correct kind of ants ordered and shipped to me?

I have read the caresheet and i have cared for reptiles for about 10 years starting with my first anole. Currently i "live with" 2 bearded dragons, a chinese water dragon, a horned mountain dragon, a pet garter snake, a blue front amazon parrot, a black cat and a giant schnoodle (dog). Any feedback is welcome and thanks in advance for any help with this decision.....

Cruzz,
Skott

Hello Skott,
Did you read the care sheet thread I posted right here in the forum? That will answer your question. The care sheet provided in the care sheet section is extremely inaccurate and should not be consulted.
I also suggest you read from phrynosoma.org. We have discussed mealworms there as well, and they are really no good for a HL.
Me and Cable_Hogue sell harvester ants...but this is the off season right now and it would not be wise to take on a HL right now. Unfortunately a HL is not the type of reptile you want to deny it’s natural prey if you want it healthy. They must have ants in my opinion.
