Don’t even think about a HL if you can’t do ants. They won’t be healthy without ants. You’ll also need a UVB lamp or a secure outdoor setup.

You can go to my group also at http://pets.groups.yahoo(dot)com/group/HornedLizards or check my profile for the link. I have a caresheet there with pictures, but you’re mom will probably have to read it. If you are 13 years old, then I suggest you don’t get a HL honestly. A better beginner lizard is a nocturnal gecko like a Leopard. There is much more care information out there about them, more people keep them, they adjust better to captivity, their food is cheaper, and in the case of a nocturnal gecko, you can get away with not having an expensive UVB light. You can’t if you have a HL. You or mom will have to shell out about $40 at least for a decent UVB light for a HL.

Now I’m confused. Are you saying you also have 2 crested and a snake, in addition to a Horned Lizard? How long have you had the geckos and the snake?

Where did you get the Horned Lizard, and do you know what species it is yet?

A Texas Horned Lizard?? You are really going to have your hands full. THLs are one the jumpiest and most stress prone HLs out there. Being in Texas, I’ve worked more with THLs than any other species.
I hope you aren’t 13 years old, because these really require more experience in my opinion.

There aren’t many places they could have gotten THLs legally. They are protected in almost every state they occur. Are you quite sure it is not a Desert HL?

If it’s a THL, it will have a double row of scales on the abdomen fringes and an unbroken white line running right down the middle of the back from just behind the head to the tip of the tail. They are usually tan with green or brown blotching or spots, sometimes with yellow trim in places. They can appear dark all over if they are kept at the wrong temperature or are sick or stressed. That is true of all HLs. Some from Texas and other states where there may be a darker background around them, they may be darker than those found in Az., NM, or Mexico.

There is a high chance that the guy at that pet store doesn’t know what he’s selling, or he’s misrepresenting what is is, or he may be selling a protected animal if it is in fact a THL. It might be a legally caught or captive bred THL...but the chances are very very rare.

Breeds them all in his basement??? Wow! So ALL the reptiles he sells are captive bred by himself?! He imports NOTHING from anybody else?!

He’s either one of the most ecofriendly, self-sufficent, and ethical pet store owners around...or he’s a flat out liar. I’m inclined to believe liar if he says he’s breeding HLs in his basement.

He might have HLs, but I’m sure they are probably Desert Horned Lizards and wild caught. 90% of those in the pet trade are. Not all HLs have spots, but most THLs from a state where it’s legal to catch them, like Az., they will have spots or prominent blotches of dark on a lighter background.

Here’s a picture of what THLs look like. The adult is from Texas, the juvenile is from Az. They have variation in pattern and coloration, but definite prominent spots or blotches, along with a white mid-dorsal stripe.

You might want to look into contacting your local authorities. Growing up my whole life in Texas, I know that for a fact the THL is a protected species and if he is selling them than I`m 99.999 % sure that he is doing so illegally. Just thought I would throw that out there for ya:)

The THL being protected depends on what state it originated from. They are protected in Texas and many other states, but can be possessed with permit too, and in some states only a hunting license is required.

There is an ENORMOUS fine associated with keeping these little buggers in Texas. This has always amused me as they are everywhere back home.
