Looks like I made a mistake bringing this baby home. Help! Ok, I went camping this weekend and I caught a baby horned lizard with my 5 yr old. Upon returning home my son begged me to keep the lizard with him (at his mothers house) but I told him I would bring it with me and find out more on how to care for it. Reading through the forum I see it is really almost impossible for someone with little experience to successfully keep one. This was on Sunday. It is now Monday night. So my problem is I am in Albuquerque, NM and I caught the little guy in the mountains. How do I go about letting him go, as I don’t want him to die. It may b tears for my son but hopefully it will help him understand the importance of even these little guys lives.

Looks like I made a mistake bringing this baby home. Help! Letting it go is the right thing to do. You no doubt have caught a Mountain Short Horned P. hernandesi. I have 5 years of experience with Horned Lizards and run a reptile rescue, but I recently had to rescue one of those hernandesi and her babies, and all but one of the babies have died. Let’s be specific here....they are difficult for those with experience to keep alive. That species does not tend to survive long away from the mountains.
The lizard should be let go in the same place it was found ( for several reasons ), and try to let it go in the morning, or early enough in the evening that it can get oriented and find somewhere for the night.
The species of lizard you caught is also protected by law in the state of NM, so I encourage you to indeed take it back where you caught it soon.
