The websites are right, depending on which scientific taxon classification you want to follow. But I think you mis-spoke. To be accurate, Spiny or Swift lizards aren’t in the "Horned Lizard family" technically. Both HLs and Spiny/Swift Lizards are in the same family though. Phrynosomatidae family. Some others still go by the classification that places HLs in the Iguanidae family, and I tend to prefer this as I think there are more similarities between HLs and Iguanas than some other lizards, but either could be considerd correct depending on who you’re talking to or how old the reference is.

Horned Lizards are of the Phrynosoma genus however, and your Texas Spiny Lizard is in the genus Sceloporus.

Is this a wild lizard?

Are you using a veterinarian? Medical treatment for reptiles is not an uncomplicated thing and many reptiles die when well intentioned people treat them on their own without the background. How a reptile responds is a serious barometer of their condition, because they try to hide symptoms of illness and injury from predators. So, when a reptiles starts acting like it’s not in good shape, it is often fatal in a few days. Many vets that don’t specialize in reptiles aren’t sure what to do most times either.

I run a reptile rescue in Wichita Falls, Tx. and take in many injured lizards, turtles, and other animals needing treatment or homes. I have medical supplies and medicines. If you would like for them to have a better chance for recovery, you could express mail them to me. I do this all the time with sick or injured herps.

No reply? Are you just looking for something to keep hostage? Or are you ligitimately wanting to make sure they survive?

Texas spinys are fun lizards to work with. Scelops are my favorite lizards, gotta love them.

Phrynosoma,
I caught interest when you said that you think that there are more similarities between HLs and iguanids than with other lizards. What are you comparing exactly? Just curious. I think that, morphologically, HLs are quite unique.

Yeah I breed them, they are so much fun!
3 years ago I caght a female texas spiny and it was so freindly I kept it for three years before releasing it.
It was six inches when I caght her and when I released her she was WAY over a foot.
resently I found her flattened by a car :( it was sad but I just got some to breed yesterday.
And also if any of yall could answer the ’problems!’ question that would be great!

  Spiny Swift ????

Would you repeat that for reptile freak? Or am i wrong, i have a Sceloporus Magister Magister and reptile freak tried to tell me he was not a swift he was a horned lizard. I am not going to lie, he understandably looks like a horny toad with a much more robust body, but he jumps around like a swift. SO what is he, you seem to know what you are talking about. Thanks Pictures coming soon got to figure out how to make them smaller
