Where to buy a horned Lizard

I’m interested in buying a horned lizard..but I live in the cloudy NEastern US and have not seen 1 for sale in PA before. I’m an experienced reptile guy. I haven’t had any in 10 years but I’ve had golden tegus, monitors and numerous snakes. I have a pretty good idea on diet and habitat. I just have no idea on where to purchase one of these guys or if it’s even legal.

you probably won’t find any in the northeast as they are not indiginous to that area. there probably are no laws in your state restricting possession for this reason, but check with Pa. wildlife/fish & game ( whatever they call it in your state ). a few species are protected in some southwestern and western states. transportation of these protected species across state lines, out of the state they are protected in, is a criminal offense in that state, and any states bordering which also protect the same species.
additionally, there will be federal issues if the species is listed federally protected also. I don’t think any are as yet. the listings in different states and federal categories can be confusing.
there are many issues with several species of horned lizards that make them difficult even for the otherwise experienced herp enthusiast. a proper habitat given your location outside their normal range, and, access to a compatable diet in your area are key concerns.
I don’t particularly like the idea of shipping horned lizards far outside their normal geographic range to a place that is not similar for those reasons.
you may try the horned lizard forum @ kingsnake.com for more discussion with others who may be able to help you, though we get people all the time asking to buy and I don’t think there are many offers to sell. there is also good information @ phrynosoma.com

these are not the horned lizards we are discussing. we are speaking of Phrynosoma; Cornutum, Coronatum, Platyrhinos, Douglasii, Hernandesi, Solare, etc., etc...

Horned Lizards are extremely hard to keep in captivity. Their main diet consists of harvester ants found predominately in the southwestern regions of the U.S. and Mexico.

Everything about them makes them very efficient at a very specific habitat and unfortunately, very inefficient at anything else. Most horned lizards die in captivity up to several months after capture as their fat deposits are eventually used up and their captive habitat disallows them to recoup.
