 Horse being a SNOT!! LOL

I rode Indi on one of our first warm days a few weeks ago, or a month ago.. It was her first ride since late fall. So I expected her to be jumpy and skittish and wanting to go back to the barn.
Well we had a 70 degree day yesterday so I rode her again.. I lunged her before getting on.. I dare say she was good for mounting though!!
I have been riding her in an "english" hackamore Link
She has done very well in the past before winter with it.. And I have a new saddle that is wider.. but it is not fitting correctly..So I will have to make some adjustments to it and if its still a problem.. off to sell it.
ANy way... we go out and she throws a fit.. we have to go across a busy (at times) hwy to ride in the hay field across from the barn. She did okay there, but then threw a fit.. I am not sure why or what exactly happened..
But she reared (never has done that), perhaps bucked a bit and then lunged to the side, and either did a small rear or something to that effect. I stayed on of course, but then felt like I had NO control of her at all... So back to the barn to get her old bit/bridle...I used to ride in a training dog bone snaffle Link.
I go back out and ride her the direction I usually do and we did much better, she listened better and only threw one fit. BLEH.. She didn’t want to walk though at first and I did get two quiet moments of relaxation on her. I think I will trailer her to her next ride, at a boarding stable where they have lots of nice trails.

I took out Pride, the hubby’s horse, who has not been more than given treats and the occasional grooming for 4 months... and saw after saddling her and starting to lunge her, she had a hunch in her back!!! woooww ever.
So over to our tiny arena/ large oval round pen thing...and let her go, me not on of course.. and she ran and bucked and played and bucked.. did I mention bucked.. and kicked out...I had treats though so when I wanted her to come up.. I would put down the stick and hold out my hand.. instant friend.. I am known to her as the treat lady.. or so I think...
ANY way I am glad I didn’t ride her out into the hay field.. cause the neighbors next to the hay field OR some one on their land.. OR really close to their or the barn owner’s land was shooting.. alot..
That may.. have been what set of Indi. she hates the sound of gun fire...
So I eventually got on Pride and she didn’t want to stand facing the gun shots.. so that was our task.. to stand quietly facing away from the pasture and other horses...
I got her to flex her neck to my foot, over and over.. and then after some time to walk around the arena and not fight me in her own way that she does.. When she doesn’t want to do something.. she does a pop rear, you can be on the ground or in the saddle.. I made her back up, and spin around and around then stand when she did that.. short lived out burst.. LOL
So hopefully more work tomorrow... followed by a trail ride this weekend if the weather holds up. and the temps.

Just an FYI.. Indi is a saddlebred cross, and the other is either arab/TB or perhaps just TB.. but she is neurotic and almost has ADHD. AND gets bored on the trail when its a long ride. She is a good horse though.. I think I saved her from a fate worse than most.. when i bought her as an unbroke 2.5 yr old.. she would have been broke to be a rent by the hour trail horse... I doubt she would have lasted long and would have gone through a series of bad homes..

wow sounds like a pretty fiesty girl u got there sounds like she needs to get back to basics and when i say basics i mean ground training so that you will have better control over her, i wouldnt get into the habit of spinning her in circles because then she will use that against you, try pressure and relase training, it works like a charm. I started my TB gelding with tons of ground training, now hes amazing to ride he has never bucked or bolted or kicked...ever. just some constructive critisizm

Thanks for the info, we do a lot of ground work for months before we ride. But not having an indoor arena, and being in the wilds of Wisconsin, with sub zero temps.
We did a fun show this weekend and I realize that my horse likes barrel racing!!
We are trying to figure out if she is half TB or half STB, we know the other half is saddlebred.

yeah i definitly know how that is we dont have an indor arena and the arena we do have is in direct sun i havent been able to work with my horses much at all. If she is a TB that might explain why shes so hyper... well that and her being so young. lol my TB is 17 and dead broke other wise im sure her would be crazy! haha but anyway good luck with your horse im sure everything will go well with her!
