I wouldn’t breed Iguanas. There are way too many homeless Iguanas out there already. Plus breeding also puts alot of stress on the female. |

| So you have room for like 90 iguanas? No one has that much room and it is impossible to find that many good homes. Please adopt instead. |

| I know that in South America the government is advocating the harvesting of iguanas over cattle, since there are so many iguanas and the meat is just as good. If you want to breed, you may want to consider a fast food chain with your breed on the menu. There are many ways to love an iguana; deep fried is one. |

| Actually, it’s high in protien and low in fat. It tastes like frog legs, but much more meat. They say iguana meat is better for you than any other form of beef product or pork. |

| Well it probably tastes like chicken then...that is what frog legs taste like. I couldn’t bear the thought of eating an iguana. I don’t think I would eat frog again either (I was a kid back then). |

| i know i’m going to catch a bunch of hullaballoo for this, but I don’t see anything wrong with eating iguana. I mean, they’rebeautiful creatures, but then again, so are cows and chickens and fish. When I had my first iguana, Ziegfried, this neighbor of mine from Curacao would always tease me, like "When’s dinner?" |

i know a lot of Mexican people eat iguanas in their homeland. and yes, it’s just as hypocritical to say it’s wrong to eat an ig as it is to eat a chicken since they are both animals, but i still could never even imagine. as far as the breeding issue goes, doesn’t everyone think it’s wierd how all of a sudden there have been a lot of posts regarding breeding? maybe it’s just me, but i feel like that subject has been discussed like, 100 times.. |

| me neither. i guess it al depends on what kinds of animals we keep as pets as opposed to what we would consider "food". i mean, i eat meat, but no way would i eat a cat, dog, lizard or even rabbit, even though that’s not too uncommon. |

I’m not saying I would do it, but I can’t hold it against someone who lives in a culture which sets that as the norm. People have been known to eat dogs in certain parts of Asia, but it’s not like they go down to the local Winn-Dixie and pick out the cut they want., it’s just an edible animal that happens to be present in their environment. If iguana is anything like gator or rattlesnake - no thanks - I’ll pass. Just not what I consider delectable, thanks.... |

if that was aimed at me, i would just like to clarify that i am not against anyone posting a question of any kind, no matter how often it’s been asked, i just thought it was a little strange that so many of us are asking about that lately. there is nothing wrong w/ asking questions,if there was i would not be on this forum. if you have read my posts, i have asked lots of things that many of you have posted a billion times as well.

| I was being a bit facetious, but there was an element of seriousness to what I had posted about eating them. For me, it’s frustrating to see the proliferation of iguanas, destined to be orphaned, just because the owner is acting irresponsibly. I wouldn’t ask anyone to eat their iguana. In fact, my iguana was on someone’s menu before I rescued it. My point was that if the supply of captive iguanas, far exceeds the demand, then what other reason is there to continually breed them if there is no other use but to harvest them for food? Go to any reptile show and there are more baby iguanas than you can count. At the last show I went to, and it was a lame show at best, there were about 25-30 baby iguanas at one table alone. There aren’t 25-30 responsible adults that want iguanas. In fact, I didn’t see a single iguana sold. And yet, people still want to breed them and have visions of nice baby iguanas going to nice homes like kittens, making everyone happy. The hard cold facts are that very few want iguanas after they mature. There is such a surplus of adult iguanas that it’s a major problem in many communities. At our zoo, people actually sneak the animals in, stuffing them in their back packs, then releasing them inside the zoo, because no zoo wants an iguana. Of all the animals I have, the iguana is my least favorite. It’s a mean, clumsy, dirty animal that is not the least bit enjoyable to care for. Just one look at this message board confirms what we all know: Iguanas will turn mean and nasty when they mature. And when I see these young kids talking about how much they want an iguana so they can be called "insane iguana lovers," I can only look ahead three years to some young adult sneaking an iguana into a zoo or letting the animal loose, hoping it will survive, but not really caring. So if you’re going to breed, breed for food, not to add to the surplus of unwanted igaunas. |

| "Of all the animals I have, the iguana is my least favorite. It’s a mean, clumsy, dirty animal that is not the least bit enjoyable to care for. Just one look at this message board confirms what we all know: Iguanas will turn mean and nasty when they mature." That’s not true! Some iguanas have a nasty temperament, to be sure, but many grow up to be very nice adults. Clumsy, I’ll give you... my Lizzy manages to get around just fine anywhere he wants to, but he’s always knocking things over. And he is a lot of work to care for, but he’s very sweet. Lizzy is a ~5 year old male that I rescued about 2.5 years ago (already named). He’s friendly, likes to be scratched, and will even come over to sit on your lap for attention sometimes. He’s potty trained, as are many iguanas. People are more likely to post here when their iguana is being problematic, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t lots of very nice igs around! PS: I haven’t posted here in ages, but maybe a few of you remember me and Liz! |

my baby girl (RJ) is awesome. She would sleep with my boyyfriend and I if I would let her! She’s very tame and the only time she ever even scratched me was when I first got her and she wasn’t tame and when she’s scared...and even then it’s never purposful.I think Iggies are great pets...but they’re time consuming...and if you dont have the time that’s when they get nasty...they’re just like babies...need a ton of attention... |
